Previously published books for which the publisher has not yet explicitly enabled downloads.

That appears to happen when Amazon’s conversion from KFX to EPUB fails. The conversion used seems to be the same as is implemented in the Kindle Create software. I have seen that fail for some books based on included fonts and unusual formatting. It is buggy.

So Amazon now have a direct download link for DRM-Free ebooks on their device management pages. It says something like 'Download the epub/pdf', but I got a zip file, which when opened showed the content of an epub file, so I just renamed from zip to epub, and then added to and opened in calibre, and all works fine, including the cover.

Funny how it is a zip file, but maybe that is seen as a deterrent to immediately side-loading to a Kobo device. Other than that, it is kind of weird that Amazon seem to be supporting epub devices now.

Anyway at least it is less painful now to get some ebooks from Amazon ... at least where you know they are DRM-Free and likely listed as such.

I grabbed a couple of free Joe Vasicek ebooks, which I know are always DRM-Free.

New K4PC (2.8.2) should work with this, if somebody could check? No changes that I could see, but maybe? I did not look deep.
Edit: Ah, amazon is tricker than I thought. Please avoid 2.8.2 for now.

Apologies, I don't have the energy to go through 223 pages. Since Amazon is tightening the screws, it seems, I need to liberate my graphic novels before that becomes impossible.

I see there are experimental solutions for the latest K4PC version, but if I want a version that is well-supported and don't want to faff around with the per-book encryption keys, what is the best archive version of K4PC to acquire?

For books published before April 2025, 1.17 is probably the best, if you manage to register it. For books published after April 2025, you'll need to use one of the 2.8 versions and faff around with keys.

Actually, using 2.8.0 works well and you don't have to faff about with multiple keys. Using DeDRM 10.0.18 and the key extractor, you do it all in one go instead of for each eBook.

How long this will last, I cannot say.

You'll need the KFX Input plugin and the deDRM 10.0.9 or alpha, as the files will be KFX.
