They are dropping support for 2012 and earlier Fire tablets as well.

Yeah, I like the Kobos too. I think that'll be the next eReader that I buy.

Amazon claims that 3% of users are affected by this change, which seems to suggest that at least 97% of users likely don’t remove DRM. Although i buy fewer books from them now, I won’t be buying from them again.

More than 1/2 use an app, not a Kindle. Phones, tablets and their own Fire tablet.
Logically their next step is to stop producing Kindles. The ebooks are a tiny part of retail and the Amazon store is now a tiny part of Amazon. They are maybe doing a second attempt at a phone. Last edited by Quoth; 04-09-2026 at 03:19 PM. |

How many of those 97% pirate eBooks instead of removing DRM?

There is the Kindle for PC method for DRM removal. Personally I too use that and not my ancient Kindles. And some newer Kindles are still working as well.

Our definitions of "newer" are different. The 10th gen Kindles are from April 2019. The others there are from 2013 (PW2) and 2014 (Voyage/7th gen).
I love my Voyages, but calling them newer Kindles, is not very accurate. |

My Oasis 3 still worked as of 3 weeks ago...which might as well be a lifetime ago I guess so I need to check it again, but I haven't seen any reports of 10th gens being locked out...yet.
Any 11th gens that were jailbroken before 5.18.5 and disabled OTA updates work...but obviously that is highly specific. I jailbroke my 11th gen PW on 5.18.3 and disabled OTA updates and it works as of this morning. I haven't tried the newest K4PC method yet (since I was mostly using my K5 for that purpose) but that is on my list of stuff to test. |

It’s not great for DRM removal but by now, oat of these books end up on the internet anyway, so perhaps DRM removal isn’t quite as necessary to make the files portable as it used to be.
Best way to go about it is probably to download the ones that you absolutely need and are certified rare reads and leave the rest up to being able to “get” them elsewhere when you switch to Kobo or Boox. |

This did not require removing DRM from the file since that was taken care of by the Amazon app that displayed the book on the computer screen. |
