rents : some appartements have very old leases which are called "loi 48" which means they are crazy cheap, but they are getting fewer and fewer and you have to basically inherit one (as soon as the lease is broken, the rent is "adjusted" to local market values). my rent is not "controlled" so to speak but i have a lease about 10 years old (it's renewed automatically every 3 years if nobody breaks it by registered letter), and it's illegal to increase the rent more than a certain percentage on an ongoing lease per year. i do tremble every renewal year for the 3 months until the deadline because i'm always afraid the owner will wake up and want to redo the lease completely, with a higher rent. all the appartments in the building that have been rented out since the new owner arrived are rented for about double what i pay. the fact that i don't leave (so he can rent my appartment for double...) drives him crazy. to get back at me, he refuses to fix up my place outside of the bare minimum what he is required to do, and every time it's a war when i call him (so i avoid that as much as possible). the problem is, along with my building, *all* the rents in paris doubled over the past 10 years ; it was the big real estate boom. it's insane. luckily the rents are starting to level off and hopefully go down soon because the bubble finally broke (it had too ; it was materially impossible to inflate it anymore, because NOBODY could afford to pay rents that high).

oh trust me, that is a bad idea ! on every rent bill (quittance) he writes "rent is due between the 1st and the 5th of the month" and he underlines it by hand with red ink.

the only thing this jackal cares about is money. if the check arrives 2 days late, he calls me at home to yell "where's my check ????" (and our conversations always go really badly.) i live in fear that he'll find some (probably illegal) pretext to throw me out, so he can charge double what i pay him to the next tenant... and paying rent late could be just the thing he's waiting for !

i'm not sure i'm very good at do-it-yourself. but we shall see... i did just change the flexible tube on my shower, because i dropped it and would you believe, the end which screws to the shower head shattered !!

then, when i took the pliers to unscrew the other end, that part shattered too !!! i know, it's only a question of screwing two ends on, so it's really not complicated, but i am proud to say i managed it with no trouble and it doesn't even leak.

as for where all the water came from... i really don't know, but it is true that it was pouring down rain like i've never seen. anyway, i put some tape over the outside where the putty should be just in case, in hopes that if it starts to pour again during the night (i hope not... but it is currently raining) at least it will divert the water back down and keep it outside...

These days I'm carving styrofoam with a small die grinder...

It gets eeeeverywhere! My eyes, my sleeves, my... shorts!

I blow it off with compressed air and I can see it come right back at me with static. Arrgh!

Is this related to a project you and I were discussing at one point? Because I was thinking of using something like balsa to send you a model.

zeda -- I'm sorry to hear about your flood. That must have been some rain! When were your gutters (the drain pipe on the roof) last cleaned? I wonder if the rain was so heavy the pipes couldn't cope with all the rain and it poured down the side of the building and into your flat?

We recently replaced several panes of glass in our flat. It is an old building with 12 small panes of glass in each window. We used glazing putty which must have had linseed oil in it, because the blue tits and great tits loved pecking at it. They would fly right up to the window and sit on the window ledge and munch away at it. We finally had to hang cds in the window to scare them away.

**okay, I just re-read the post, I don't want any snide comments about great tits and blue tits -- they are birds!
