[QUOTE=JSWolf;4578249]I don't think anyone will risk having a brick by deregistering. I'm not going to try it.[/QUOTE
I have a PW1. I’m in the process of sending all my books to my old kindle, just so I can put them on my pc as a last back up, after 500 my storage was running low so I reset my kindle to get rid of them quickly, I had to reregister it and it was fine. Next time I will try and see what I can do before I register it. |

I just purchased a PW 5th gen about 2mos ago after my Kindle KB cracked a screen (I did replace it, but I wanted a little extra insurance). I even paid $20 to remove ads. I'm pretty upset about this.
I just used the Satsuoni method to remove DRM on the most recent version of K4PC (2.8.3) and it was effective. I did this on books that I had purchased last week. Not nearly as elegant as just dragging them over from my kindle though. What I'm most bummed about is that I don't think my kindle and my Kindle app on my phone will sync anymore. It was nice being able to pickup my reading on either device. |

Something like this has been on the cards for a while. That's why I stopped buying at Amazon (mostly) more than a year ago. TBH I have slipped and bought a few that aren't available elsewhere but mostly I buy from epub stores and convert.
I also made sure all my Kindles are jailbroken and have Koreader installed. I just need to remember not to factory reset any of them. But the main thing to remember is that whatever source you get your ebooks from, if you choose to de-DRM them, then do it as soon as you acquire them. It's much easier to do them one at a time than scurry to do it on a big backlog when something like this comes down the pike. |

I haven't received an email yet either, but I have no reason to doubt it will happen in the U.S. as well.

Well, it works for me. They've successfully stopped my practice of buying books from them (although it's pretty much been that way for a few years now). I want the freedom to move my book (I bought) to whatever device I want to use. That's not pirating.

Minor nit. If you look at the About Kindle in the help menu, it shows the version as 2.8.3 with the build number as 70995). The installer downloads as KindleForPC-installer-2.8.70995.exe
See attached image. |

No email for me yet for my Paperwhite (PW1 / Kindle 5th generation / whatever one calls it; the 2012 one, the first Paperwhite released).
I actually wonder how they’re handling this for e.g. European (or other market) customers that don’t have their own Amazon storefronts? I buy my ebooks (well, I don’t do that lately, but the Amazon store that allows me to buy ebooks) on Amazon.com, but for buying an actual new Kindle device, if I wanted to do so, I don’t think I even could do that on Amazon.com - they used to have quite well-hidden pages for “international Kindles” but I can’t find any now that would even ship to Estonia. If I wanted to buy a new Kindle, I’d have to do it via a European Amazon - preferably Amazon.de as that seems to be the most straightforward to deal with here … so where would that leave people like me with the discount codes and credit towards books, I wonder? (It’s a moot point in practice as, even if I really liked Amazon and its business practices, which I don’t really care for much these days, I like buttons and they’re not making e-readers with buttons any more, so… yeah. Even if the jade metallic Paperwhite SE does look nice, admittedly. But in theory, they’d want me to buy a new one, so I’m currently just curious how it’d have to work.) |

Later I got a Kindle DXG in an international sale on Amazon US but it was always on Amazon UK. Briefly the Keyboard was re-registered in the USA, but then Amazon killed non-domestic US addresses (at least that's what they claimed). It was registered then a 3rd time, but to UK Amazon with Irish address. Emails have been received at three accounts in Ireland for the DXG, K3/Keyboard and Paperwhite 1. Similar derisory upgrade offer and otherwise same text as USA. For a while you could switch to Amazon US for Digital content in Ireland, but it seemed to be purely US$ billing as actual content and price was the same as if logged in to UK, not the same as a USA customer, or not logged in, thus a title available in USA and not in UK was still not available. So this is global. Offers may vary by local market. |
