I still have my Kindle Scribe 2022 version on 5.18.6. Apart from sideloaded pdf annotations, is there a reason to upgrade? Is this reasonably safe now or is it a vibe-coded mess?

I would stick with what you have in airplane mode. There's not enough information on this new firmware.

Initial reports from KCC users for sideloaded manga/comics:
Some people were reporting the same issues as 5.19.3: all the options in the Aa menu are gone like virtual panel view, 2 page landscape had pages on wrong side, no % read. But some people decided to update to 5.19.3.0.1 via usb while the Kindle was in airplane mode. 4 reports saying that all the problems were gone. Then one person tried turning wifi on and all the problems returned. Last edited by axu2; Today at 02:38 PM. |

Copy pasting the discussion from last thread, hopefully this issue is fixed, I think I saw some reddit commenters saying it was fixed but we will have to see.
I think someone found the real reason 5.19.3 got pulled (this bug may have been activated for only some users on 5.19.2 and all users on 5.19.3). Sounds like the Kindle is continously uploading gigabytes of logs for 15 hours at a time to Amazon servers in sleep mode. And nothing, even a factory reset, helps. One comment sums it up in a funny way (though it was only 3 GB over 17 hours): Quote:
Based on the reddit thread, the error logs are related to errors from upload attempts, so they wouldn't be generated in airplane mode. And the logs only exist briefly in ram so don't affect free space. Basically logs are continuously being generated and deleted rapidly in ram and uploading at the same time. |

With 5.19.3.0.1 on my PW6-Gen12, when you click the 3 vertical dots on Library or Home and select "Goodreads Shelves" (used to be just "Goodreads," I think), it takes you now to the Kindle Store. 5.19.2, actually, took you to your Goodreads webpage.

This x.0.1 seems to some kind of emergency release, which seems to fix only the crisis issue (probably the infinite log upload). So, I would assume that the rest of the issues would still continue to exists.
Expect fixes for them in 5.19.4 or later. |

I've owned Kindles since 2010, currently a Paperwhite 11th. If it's confirmed that 5.19.2 is the last update for it, I will never buy a Kindle again (I also have a Kobo Libra 2).

I see no reason the PW5 cannot get an new firmware updates. Heck, Kobo did it for a long time with older devices.

That's precisely why I say it; if they do, it would be planned obsolescence for hardware that is fully capable of continuing to receive the same updates as newer models (in this sector of e-readers, technology does not advance as quickly as, for example, smartphones). And yet, Samsung, for example, is providing more years of updates than Amazon for Kindles!

I hope Amazon gets nailed in the EU for abandoning the PW5 when it's perfectly capable of running the new firmware. |
