Kindle Paperwhite – Update to 5.6.1.1 fails (reboots, no update)
Post:
I have a jailbroken Kindle Paperwhite (5th Generation). I initially downgraded the firmware from 5.6.1.1 to 5.3.3 to enable the jailbreak. After successfully jailbreaking on 5.3.3, I am now trying to update back to 5.6.1.1. Issue: When I place the official update file in the root directory, the “Update Your Kindle” option becomes enabled. However, after selecting it:
What I’ve tried so far:

Sorry, I don't have a solution for you. I've actually done the same: downgraded to 5.3.3 from 5.6.1.1 to JB, but I haven't attempted to upgrade back to 5.6.1.1 afterwards. Out of curiosity, what's your reasoning behind upgrading?

I was able to update from 5.3.3 to 5.6.1.1 after jailbreaking last time. I think I may have done something wrong this time that blocked the upgrade process. My reason is that the KUAL launcher requires a new keystore to work, and the keystore update did not work for me. I read that updating to the latest firmware is required for it to function properly. For now, I have installed the KUAL Booklet version, which allows me to launch KOReader directly. |

Thank you for the explanation, Sohaib.
I reproduced your KUAL issue (I was actually using the Booklet version from the get-go -- hence didn't encountered this problem). After some digging, looks like method that MKK Kindlet JailBreak uses to skip Java security policy for Dev kindlets just doesn't work on 5.3.3, the patch -- in json_simple-1.1.jar -- doesn't have JailbreakerPolicy class ever activated. I ended up patching /opt/amazon/ebook/lib/KindletImplementation-2.2.jar to:
I used Claude to assist me with patching. I attach the patched jar and a python script that does the patching: the latter both for the paranoid, and to be able to double-check the changes. The patched jar has to replace the FW /opt/amazon/ebook/lib/KindletImplementation-2.2.jar -- you should backup the existing one first. The easiest way to do so is using KOReader's SSH server (dropbear), since you're already using KOReader. |
