Personally, I think 11th generation is better used these days since it follows Amazon’s naming convention.

Exactly - just call it what it is. I have the "Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation)" - I have no idea what the special nerd code for that is, and I don't care.

But if you do that, not many will know which Kindle you are talking out. This is why PW6 is so much better as more people will know what you mean. So don't change the naming convention which will confuse more then PW6.

I'm not proposing changing the convention - I'm saying to leave it with the official names, as also seen on the wiki page for kindles:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle

How can you possibly say that using the correct, official name of a product is going to confuse someone? And that the solution to that confusion is using some sort of unofficial shorthand instead? Bizarre.

I think the main thing is that Amazon prominently labels on the packaging box "Gen 11" and "Gen 12" and the fact that it clearly says "11th Generation" and "12th Generation" in settings menus. (Pictures off google)

As per the wiki that you shared
Name :Kindle Paperwhite 6
Gen: 12

Name abbreviates to PW6

Maybe, we should call it PW6 12th gen :-)

It's irrelevant what Amazon puts on the box. The thing is that we've been using these unofficial abbreviations for so long, that we've become used to them. We are not used to using the generation as part of the name. So it's quite easy to see why PW5 is a lot easier to understand then PW11.

No, it’s not. People do not know what PW6 means. They know the generation though. They also are more likely to identify by the year. I know this because I’ve been modding r/kindle for 5 years now. They have no idea how many Paperwhites there have been. You’re dealing in nerd speak while I deal with the average person on the daily.

I'm not entirely sure who this "not many" is... there is a world outside of the MobileRead forums, I'm sure you're aware.

I think someone found the real reason 5.19.3 got pulled (this bug may have been activated for only some users on 5.19.2 and all users on 5.19.3). Sounds like the Kindle is continously uploading gigabytes of logs for 15 hours at a time to Amazon servers in sleep mode. And nothing, even a factory reset, helps.

One comment sums it up in a funny way (though it was only 3 GB over 17 hours):

Quote:
effectively the [kindle update] created a botnet DDoSing Amazon

Also, you can email Amazon from Kindle Settings > Help > contact us > email now.

What would happen to these log files if you were in airplane mode? Are these logs large enough that they would noticeably fill up the free space?

That option does not exist any longer, even on Kindles that do not get firmware updates (e.g. Paperwhite 10th generation). You get a QR code for https:www.amazon.com/Kindle-Help (at least for US customers).

Perhaps there are some Kindles that still do this but none of them are running recent firmware.

For this thread and all others, please stop the constant wrangling/attempt to impose personal preference in regard to shorthand naming conventions. If you honestly can't figure out what something means, ask. Otherwise, let it go.
