Personally I would never install an update on a device it was not released for.

I've done it before on my Libra 2. Many people have done it on their Kobo Mini since it's no longer getting official firmware updates.

I've done it before on my Libra 2 and many do it on their Kobo Mini. I've not heard of anyone having a problem on their Mini with new firmware. As long as it's for the same hardware revision, it works.

Absolutely not. They use completely different processors, since the Libra Colour uses MediaTek.

Those URLs that are generated are device specific. The kobo8 in the URL that @JSWolf generated says the update is for the Sage and original Elipsa.

OTOH, other than the Libra 2 where the issues with the Kobo Remote are severe enough that Kobo decided to do a phased rollout, I'm not sure if I would recommend installing pre-release firmware unless you enjoy living on the bleeding edge.

No. The processor, the power management hardware, the hardware support for the eInk panel, the wireless hardware are all different. You will either end up doing a manual factory reset or asking for an image of a Libra 2 that matches your hardware revision.

I've done it once for the Libra 2 and I had no issue.

A kobo with a microSD is easily fixable. But the Sage has soldered storage, so cannot fix it outside of sourcing another mobo for it - if that even possible.

You seem to be assuming that the Sage would not be recoverable by using a factory recovery.

Yes. One of my worst nightmares is an update that causes a bootloop I can't fix. Like what happened with Aura models when firmware .23429 came out.

For what it may be worth, I haven't seen 4.38.23648 cause any boot issues on my 5 devices that I installed it on.

I believe you. Although I remain skeptical about updates. The mentioned firmware version 23429 broke some Libra 2 units, and some were perfectly fine. My guess is different revisions. At the same time, thank God we don't have to deal with the issues Kindle users have. Inconsistency at its finest.

23648 works for me as well, the menus feel faster. But I don't want to go crazy with updates, after all, I just read text files.

Not all Kobo with an SD card are easily fixable. fixable. The Libra 2 is not easily fixable because of the gunk on the SD card.
