Pocketbook Verse not seeing books in library

Hello, this is going to be a long post, but I will try to be as brief as possible. Short version of the problem: my Pocketbook Verse is not seeing anything I upload to the library.

Long version: I purchased a pocketbook Verse, connected to my computer and deleted preloaded books. When i disconnected, deleled books still showed in the library as 'ghost entries' (they would not open, I couldn't do any operations, nothing). I poked around in the system files and in the explorer-3 db. I am a developer so i am used to looking under the hood. After some tinkering, the ghost entries were gone, but the file browser would not see anything I uploaded. Factory reset did not help either. I finally exchanged the device for an identical one. Thinking that my problems might stem from deleting stuff on the computer, I deleted the preloaded books through the UI. Everything went smoothly. I was even able to upload two ebooks and they showed up. Then I tried to upload 6 more and the library stopped seeing anything again. I installed KOReader and all of them show up on the device just fine, but the built in software refuses to see anything I upload.
Any ideas what could be happening and how to fix it? I don't understand, are those preloaded books loadbearing or something? The device is not unusable thanks to Koreader but it is pretty annoying that I can't get it to work
Thank you in advance for any suggestions

The Library app uses the database to display what is available and to launch the reader app for an ebook. That database only gets updated by a system program that runs from time to time. If you add or delete ebooks directly on the filesystem, the database won't instantaneously sync to those changes. There used to be a menu item in the System tab for starting that process directly, but I don't know if it is there in newer firmware versions. You can try rebooting the device and waiting a few minutes to get the process to update the database if the System menu item is not there.

Correct, I understand that it uses sqlite and i poked around in the db (copy) to see the structure, what saved and what didn't. What I don't get is how to trigger the library update. Also, why 2 first books showed up right away and the others didn't at all. The System menu offers no help and restarts did not do anything either. I'm just trying to figure out why I am having those issues with two devices now. Am I the unlucky one?

If there is a book with problems in it, it can hang the update process and block further changes to the database. Maybe you can remove your books, and then add them one or two at a time to see if there are problems like that.
