Question Download bulk metadata job hangs

Downloading bulk metadata - even for one book - keeps hanging. I am able to download metadata when I'm editing the metadata.

I restarted calibre in debug mode, but there was no printout at all during bulk download. I already waited over 10 minutes to download metadata for one book.

I also reduced the metadata sources to only one (I tried Google and Goodreads as standalone source) - but it worked as mentioned above.

Job is "Waiting", but I could wait for an hour and wouldn't happen anything.

It works inside Edit Metadata.

I'm using Calibre 9.5.

I tried:
- restart calibre
- restart Windows
and just to be sure (but since it's work for inside Edit Metadata, shouldn't change the behaviour)
- switch from WIFI to Ethernet
- use VPN

Any ideas? Thanks!

Try rebooting in safe mode.

Overall, I don't recommend using Bulk Metadata Download. Too many sites will ban your IP for a variable period since a BMD tends to look much like a denial of service attack.

Switching from WiFi to Ethernet may change nothing as it is the IP of your router, not the PC's ports

It helped partially, I can download metadata for around 50 books. Previously I was able to download more than that. Also if there was any kind of access problem, I received an error.

My "biggest" problem is not that something goes wrong, but that I don't got any error message: whether is it because the website(s) refuse my query or anything else.

After such an error, I can't use the bulk download until restart.

wishful thinking: it would be also nice if 80% is downloaded, then the result of that 80% could be processed.

I considered this too, hence I also tried to use it with VPN. It also failed to download metadata for only one book, where it worked from inside the metadata editor.

It provides stability of the network connection for the PC, hence I provided it as an additional information. But I also used VPN to change my IP to the outside word.

That makes sense, hence I tried VPN too. I also waited before I posted here. It also didn't worked to download metadata for only one book with BMD, but it worked from inside the metadata editor.

That indicates you have some software on your machine blocking the calibre worker process used to download metadata. Typical culprits are antivirus/security software.

It's not worth it to download metadata as there is always something that needs to be fixed manually. So you may as well just deal with the metadata manually.

What is wrong with your eBook metadata that you feel the need to download it? Most of the time, I just need to download a proper description and maybe find the series name.

VERY TRUE. I am a serious fan for wired on everything that CAN accept the connection.
When I made the comment, I was thinking about IP blocking
