Mistress Pat, the sequel to Pat of Silver Bush, follows Patricia Gardiner from age 20 to 31 as she strives to maintain her beloved Silver Bush farm. She hates change as much as ever, and finds in Silver Bush a refuge where she is somewhat shielded from it, but changes happen nevertheless. In the course of eleven years, new servants, new neighbors, and new lovers come and go. She faces loss, heartbreak, and growing loneliness while navigating adulthood, ultimately finding love with her long-term friend, Hilary Gordon, after a period of personal crisis.

The novel has a darker, more melancholic tone than many of Montgomery's other works, reflecting the author’s own life stresses at the time.

L.M. Montgomery (1874–1942) was a celebrated Canadian author best known for her 1908 international bestseller Anne of Green Gables. Raised in rural Prince Edward Island by strict grandparents, she drew on her lonely childhood to create rich, imaginative worlds. A former teacher and journalist, she wrote 20 novels, hundreds of short stories, and poems. Today she is remembered as a central figure in Canadian literature. Her writings explore themes of the creativity and inner life of young women; family and belonging; and connections to the natural world.
