There is new DRM showing up on Kindles running 5.16.2.1.1 firmware and those with 5.18.5 and newer. I have not seen anything new regarding other firmware versions so far.

Yeah, I'm not sure how they did it without updating the software release number. but deDRM in Calibre now only works with generations 3 (kindle keyboard) through 6th gen, and it might work with the 7th generation basic kindle since that has the same software number as the 6th gen (different than the 7th gen PW).

It appears that Kindle software has long had a backdoor that allows Amazon to apply patches without going through the full firmware update process. I don't know why they waited until now to make use of it to lock down their DRM.

I suspect that 5.16.2.1.1 was chosen because it is the final firmware version for several Kindle models. Expansion of the new DRM to additional Kindles is likely.

This is not true. From what I understand, while 5.16.2.1.1 does not work, anyversion between that and 5.18.5 do work, as well as versions below 5.16.2.1.1. I just downloaded 3 new books onto my Oasis 3 running 5.18.2 and was able to add them to Calibre and convert to epub with no issues.

Maybe not yet. But I'd expect Amazon to modify the DRM eventually. So don't get too comfortable.

I'm just lucky I have a Kindle Touch that cannot download KFX.

I expect they will disable the non-KFX models from downloading new books eventually.

And before you say that people would protest, that has not stopped Amazon in the past. People protested when D&T was disabled too. Besides, the number of folks who really use those old models for reading is probably quite small. Most Kindle readers read in apps, I'd think.

I can't see Amazon disabling perfectly good Kindle devices. That would mean that a lot of people would not be able to read their eBooks that the paid good money for.

With costs rising because of the War in Iran, Amazon cannot really expect everyone with an older Kindle to buy a new Kindle now.

They can read in the app or cloud reader. Yes, they might not prefer to, but it's not like Amazon would be taking away every option to read Kindle books. Nowhere it is said that Amazon must guarantee an eink Kindle to read their books.

That may not work for a lot of people.

That would be the same as taking away your eInk Kobos and making you read with your phone, tablet, or computer.

Of course. I'm not saying I support such a decision. I'm just saying that's a likely thing for Amazon to do, if they really want to close all holes in their DRM scheme.

If Amazon want to close all the holes, they'll need to also do away with Kindle apps as that is also a security hole. And Amazon may as well do away with any firmware version that's been jailbroken.
