Maybe? I think it's easy to forget that most people are not versed in the dark arts of the command line. I personally don't know how to do that. I could try to use AI to figure it out, but do I really want to copy/paste some AI generated script if I don't know what it's doing to my system?

No, two reasons:

1:A PC comes with either MacOS or Windows. You really have to hunt to find one with no OS, or pre-installed Linux.

2:Certain companies dominating payroll, accounts, stock control or other business things don't do Linux versions. Some don't do MacOS either.

You need the Terminal / Console for loads of things on Windows. More as time goes by as some versions of Windows 10 the local account creation is gone and you have to use the console.

I hope it never gets widely adopted then. I'm not sure there's really a need for Linux to reach wide user adoption.

Linux has a small % of total market share of desktop computers / laptops (https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market...ktop/worldwide) but because there are so many computers it works out at around 60 million users globally. (Chrome O/S is also linux based)

[Obviously it is the dominant OS for servers, cloud computing, and mobile (it powers Android)

You don't have to hunt all that hard. The mini-PC I bought could have easily come bare bones.

Agreed. Most pc builders offer a choice of no O/S

Although tbh, I think a lot of people moved to Linux when their pc couldn't cope with the Win11 requirements. Linux keeps an old pc going quite a long time. If you don't game or need highly specialist software, Linux is a very good O/S.

And most people can't move to Linux because the software they run isn't compatible with Linux.

The average Joe does not use anything exotic. Many Linux alternates work similar and can deal with the old files.
Libre Office does a great job replacing MS office
Calibre, Sigil have almost 0 learning (an most of us are not the Average Joe)

You can import Firefox/edge bookmarks.
It will read a Windows drive

So it is probably the Gamers and graphic artists that have more issues the those the surf, email and write documents.

Increasingly people are accessing most software via a browser.

For office software, you can actually access the 'free' version of MS office via a browser. Teams is accessible via a browser. And Google Docs is browser based. If you want an application on your machine, Libre Office is compatible with MS office (I actually use Libre Office on my windows PC as I find it just as good as MS office for my home uses and it's free).

I play chess and nearly all the tools I need for that are now available through websites and I don't need software on the pc itself.

Gaming is windows based for sure.

And I dabble in photography and, although there are open source alternatives, Adobe software is the standard and that's only on windows/Mac

I basically have one windows machine which is my 'main machine'. And then my second laptop which I have downstairs to use in the kitchen if I need to do something is a 10 year old machine which I moved to linux when W11 came out.

If they do, then WORK should supply the PC. I don't know when things changed from WORK supplying required equipment, to assuming any hourly employee supply almost everything. BTW California employment law says they can require 'hand tools', (also there is a requirement of 2X minimum wage if they do) Note: If you choose to bring something better, that is on you, but will it pass the smell test if they supply cr*p and then complain you are not getting the job done.

Yes. I was talking about pcs for personal use. Someone who supplies their own pc for work (self employed or because of a BYOD policy) may well choose Windows etc

But the point being made more generally is that Linux is increasingly a viable alternative; certainly to repurpose a 2nd laptop that can no longer run windows 11

I won't switch from MS Office to Libre Office ats — a) because for me, MS Office's UI, is far better, and b) many addons - e.g. TransTools, EpubTools, and Kutools aren't available for LO Writer or Calc.

I very much doubt Warner Bros paid for Ryan Coogler's copy of Final Draft; even if they did, it doesn't run on Linux. The DaVinci video editor will only run on Windows, MacOS and a couple of Linuxi (no idea why), Final Cut only runs on Mac or IOS. Autodesk's AutoCAD, Moldflow, Revit etc only run on Windows or MacOS.

There are a lot of industry specific software products that don't run on Linux, and there are a lot of buyers of the output of such software who require that those products be used… e.g. Netflix.
