Just a note - only books with DRM arrive as acsm files. DRM-free books come as plain epubs.

Is your PW3 not on the dreaded firmware 5.16.2.1.1?

You can also use Kobo Desktop and Obok. So again, no Kobo device needed and two ways to free your books.

which ones? says its unavailable in europe, but its still available and works perfectly fine there.
kobo desktop also allows the download of titles that arent available as acsm on the website (like some humble bundles for example)

But that's an extra bit of bloat (IMHO) that's not actually needed. If you download as ePub, you can use calibre to send it to the Kobo as KePub if that's what's wanted.

You just need the DeDRM and ACSM Input plug-ins to be able to download ePub with DRM.

I beleive there are numerous bug fixes for edge cases. You can probably look at the github repository.

The author's stated reason for not releasing 1.0 yet is that there are some problems in installing 1.0 after 0.0.16, in that sometimes the preferences don't get updated to the 1.0 format properly.

I admit I'm still on 0.0.16, as I've had no trouble with it. If I was starting afresh, I'd install 1.0.

The ACSM Input plugin can be found here: ACSM Input

The only official release is 0.0.16, but I strongly recommend using the 1.0 release which can be found for download in this post in that thread. The calibre-plugin.zip file.

If you also have DeDRM installed, after the ACSM Input plugin has downloaded the book, DeDRM will remove the DRM before it's added to your calibre library.
I am very confused. I've been adding acsms to Calibre directly and it downloads and DeDRMs via a single plugin, DeDRM. What is the acsm-input plugin *adding* that I'd want it? Does it not need an Adobe Digital Editions key? Does it grab more metadata/better cover?

I fire up Calibre, click "add book" in the top left, select the acsm. It imports the book as ePub with DRM stripped. I have metadata, cover, etc. There's even a checkbox in the DeDRM setup that removes the acsm file after a successful import, so I don't have to clean up.

I've installed 1.0. If I have any trouble with it, I can use one of my configuration backups to go back to 0.0.16.

DeDRM does not do anything with .acsm files. https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools...init__.py#L158 :
Code:
    file_types              = set(['epub','pdf','pdb','prc','mobi','pobi','azw','azw1','azw3','azw4','azw8','tpz','kfx','kfx-zip'])
If you're importing .acsm files into calibre, and they're ending up as ePubs, you have ACSM Input or something similar installed as a plugin. ACSM Input used to be called DeACSM.

Ah, you know what, I think I have DeACSM and completely forgot about it. My bad, thanks for the info.

I usually download via ADE. Never bothered switching to the ASCM plugin. But I like that I can also use Kobo Desktop and Obok too. And I have a Kobo. So a few different ways to get my hands on the books and decrypt them which are all easy. Unlike Amazon. (Or the place I originally bought ebooks ages ago, B&N.)

I like that I can download ePub from multiple sources (including Kobo) and that I then have a choice of ePub or KePub on my Libra 2. If I have the ePub and I want ePub, I don't have to remove the KePub code. And if I want KePub, I just have to put a Y in a column in the library and once the ePub is sent to the Libra 2, I have KePub.
