I've never had issues with third party cables.

Power only cables are normally labelled as such in the listing. For instance on Amazon.ca https://www.amazon.ca/USB-USB-C-Secu.../dp/B09479KTC9 is charge only.

Over the years I've bought cables from Anker or UGreen for data transfer with no issues.

The main rational for power only cables is additional device security especially when using public USB ports for charging; there is no way for any data to be surreptitiously stolen from your device.

I use generic USB-C and Micro USB cables. I throw the ones I get with my Kobos (or any device) in a box labeled "USB cables".

Anker make good USBC cables. With my Libra 2, I'm using a USBC braided cable that came with an iPhone The microUSB cab;e that came with my H2O I am using with my Kindle Touch. I have no idea hwere the USBC cable that came with the Libra 2 is.
