NickelMenu: An integrated launcher for Kobo eReaders

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can save me.

I had Koreader all set up perfectly. I made the mistake of exiting Koreader after connecting an 8bitDo via Bluetooth which removed my nickelmenu button.

I tried dropping koboroots.tgz back into the .Kobo file and rebooting - nothing.

Tried a factory reset, nothing.

I've tried so many different ways of the above and still can't get it back. I'm gutted 😭

You may want to try either a manual factory reset or enabling Developer mode (in the search box, type devmodeon and then search). You should then see in More => Settings => Device information => Developer options. Under Developer options near of the bottom of the entries, you will find Factory reset your eReader.

Here's the link for the Manual reset Kobo Libra Colour procedure.

Either of these will wipe your Kobo back to the factory firmware version removing all user information.

Which KoboRoot.tgz did you use? You should use the NickelMenu one to restore it.

How is the code to start sync? In order to sync, I want to implement it in :reader: instead of going back to the start page.

Is there any function that will return the NickelMenu version number? I searched the docs but I didn't see one.

I have enough customization on my Kobo that I'm trying to collect all the software versions in one place - currently just a text file, but it would be great if it could be a pop-up :-)

You can get it from syslog (logread + grep) or the binary itself. But it shouldn't matter since I never break backwards compat with NM.

Everytime I exit Koreader via Koreader "Exit" my Nicklmemnu is gone after the Clara BW (latest firmware) reboots. Is there anyway to fix this its been a problem for quite some time. I am on very latest Clara BW firmware AND latest Koreader.

I can't get Dropbox to link on my Kobo Clara Colour running fw 4.45.23684. It's set up properly in NickelMenu and in Kobo ereader.conf.

I can launch Dropbox menu item in NicklMenu. Dropbox link comes up. I click it, and my Clara says "loading." It sits here loading forever and never finishes. Any ideas? My KCC is happily running NickelMenu, NickelSeries and NickelClock.

on the NickelMenu config file in .adds\nm\config I added the menu item

menu_item :main :NickelMenu Version :cmd_output :500:/bin/sh /mnt/onboard/.adds/nm_version.sh

This returns the release version in the hexadecimal format, like 15a95f7, as used in the github, not the pretty release version number like 0.6.0. Tried a few different approaches (syslog and whatnot) but readind directly from the binary file was the only solution that worked for me, so yeah. I also only tested on Kobo Aura HD, if that makes a difference. And now that it's done, I'm not even sure why or how it's useful, it was just bothering me.

There's a problem with the Kobo firmware that causes NickelMenu to be deleted. https://github.com/koreader/koreader/issues/12739

The solution right now is to restart the device if you want to exit KOReader.

I disable the KOReader "Exit" menu option so I don't accidentally do this and only leave "Restart" and "Reboot device" enabled.

That's from 2024 and it doesn't say what firmware version. Plus, the version of KOReader mentioned is old.
