I'm experiencing it too on a 9th gen Oasis, and I've seen a couple people also reporting this for 7th gen Paperwhites which are on the same firmware over at the GitHub. It doesn't appear to be the newer KFX DRM that Kindles on 5.18.5 and up or recent Kindle for PC are getting. However, new downloads of KFX format (regardless of the book's publishing date) are no longer working even with the correct serial number entered, only previous downloads. I'm guessing the same is true for any Kindle which receives KFX format -- previously unaffected 6th through 10th gen?

I assume that Kindles which do not handle kfx format remain usable the same as usual. I can confirm that's the case with my Kindle Touch testing a newly downloaded copy of a DRMed book (azw3/kf8). Curious what others are seeing.

I saw those reports...definitely worrying! I just "bought" some $0.00 books and am about to send them to my 5th gen non-touch Kindle and my 10th gen Oasis and maybe my jailbroken 11th gen PW5 (once I reverify OTA updates are disabled). So we'll see what we see.

10th gen Oasis 3 on 5.18.2 (4434550025): 5 books; all 5 came in as KFX and not kfx-zip, so?

for kicks, I deleted one of them and restarted Calibre in debug mode and then added it so I could look at the log and make sure dedrm was required/took place.

And...it does say it decrypted.

Thanks for trying things out. I'm going to dig out my 6th gen Paperwhite firmware 5.12.2.2 and see what happens there.

8th Gen Oasis on 5.8.11: fresh downloads of 5 books, all 5 came in as KFX and not kfx-zip.

(I blocked software updates long ago using empty update.bin.tmp.partial file, so have been able to stay at 5.8.11.)

My calibre is still at 8.16.2; running DeDRM 10.0.9 alpha release.

DeDRM is still working on my Oasis 3, using DeDRM 10.0.9 and Calibre 8.12. I added a bunch of books to Calibre yesterday, and this morning I added another one, and this afternoon another.

fwiw, I have at least 5 serial numbers in my setup (an old K3, my K5, Oasis 3, 11th gen PW, and an old K3 that belonged to my dad).

Anyway, the new test today DID work though it also has several lines in the log where it failed and "trying next fallback" but eventually it succeeded. I assume the failures were due to the multiple serial numbers I have.

So...still good here for now...?

I notice that texasnightowl is also still using DeDRM 10.0.9, and odamizu is as well...maybe the version of DeDRM has something to do with it? Is there anyone using that version who can not successfully decrypt their Kindle books?

The 2 most recent open issues on github (where decryption is failing on 7th gen PW, 5.16.2.1.1) report using 10.0.9 also. The alternate version 10.0.18 is only used with the k4pc method I believe? And was used only to generate different logging...if I'm reading the github messages correctly.

There is definitely something odd going on with DRM on Kindle devices running 5.16.2.1.1 firmware that started only a few days ago. The logs I have seen posted indicate the presence of a new DRM type in use. That raises a lot of questions.

Does Amazon have a hidden means of updating the DRM for those devices without a full firmware release?

If so then why are they only deploying it now?

Is this just the first trial of something that will be coming to more Kindles running other older firmware versions?

It looks like there are more interesting times ahead for Kindle owners!

Yeah, this is my big worry. And why start with 5.16.2.1.1 instead of some of the more recent kindles like the 10th gens on 5.18.2?
