This stands up a temporary environment that contains both openssl and calibre, and runs calibre. Because I've got both in my configuration.nix, they're already installed and nothing needs to download. It just starts up and works.

I think this can also be accomplished with a flake, but I'm still learning a ton, so I don't have that figured out yet. For now, I just edited my calibre .desktop file to use the nix-shell command and it just works.

Thank-you. It looks like that worked. I am also trying to figure out what you can do with flakes. Maybe figuring out how to do this with a flake will provide some motivation.

I'm a *very* new user to Calibre - I can't d/l the ACSM Input plugin. The error told me to post this to the forum. I read as many posts as I could bear and downloaded some zip files containing py files, but I'm not sure what to execute. Can you help?

libcrypto is usually part of openSSL You could try installing openSSL.

Or you could try downloading the current Calibre package for your system, see https://calibre-ebook.com/download

(Calibre 7 is really quite old. the current version is 9.3.1!)

Install openSSL and calibre 9.3.1 and then try again. Do not download calibre from any distro. Download it from the official calibre website.

Thank you for your help. I had installed Calibre from the distro. I didn't realize it was so old. Once I had the updated Calibre, the plugin installed immediately.

This is why you should never ever install calibre from any distro and always install from the official website.

Has the .acsm file expired? If you look at the .acsm file with a text editor, you may see something like the following lines:

No, it seems the vendor's ACSM service was offline for a few minutes: I could not even download the ascm file again. I tried again and it decoded as expected.
