Is there any way to open "the next book" within the Ebook-Viewer?
More specifically, is there a function or a plugin to navigate between books in the viewer app? Say, open volume 2 of a series from volume 1, and vice versa? I am aware of the management (folder structure) of Calibre, and there isn't a structure to associate order between books, which I see recognize as the app's strength. But, when I am reading a comic or a light novel, I often want to go back and forth between books, and it is tedious to select the next or previous book to navigate between them. Perhaps, "series" and "series_index" can be used to link the books somehow. Thanks in advance. |

Load each into the viewer before (assumes The Viewers preferences: Miscellaneous: is set to allow only a single instance)
Now You can use the down arrow next to the 'open' folder to pick from the (viewers) recent history |

What's needed is something simple, like an m3u.playlist
@Comfy.n's VL from selection plugin could be the genesis - except it would store a .reading-plan file in a <config>reading-plans folder AND the Viewer would be enhanced to support reading-plans. BR |

Dont really follow the use case. If you want to read a particular set of books simply select that set of books in the main calibre interface using whatever criteria you like. Then after you finish the first book close the viewer and start the second via the main calibre interface. Having to do a few extra clicks between *books* is really not that much of a burden.

@kovidgoyal: is Viewer plugins support on your todo list?
I remember you saying that there is no framework for Viewer plugins, or something along those lines. |

Actually, it's already doable. Make sure the viewer is configured for multiple instances - Preferences->Miscellaneous->Allow only single instance... is unchecked - ack @theducks.
If necessary use VL from selected plugin to group books in the order they are to be read, or search for a series whatever, select the books (last to first), then View specific format (if you have multiple formats). The books will be stacked on top of one another in reading order. Read first book, close it, and the second book will be waiting for you. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 02-23-2026 at 11:50 PM. |

One issue I find with opening multiple books is the QTWebEngine internal process associated with each book opened consumes about 520MB of memory and the trio of calibre worker processes associated with each book chew up about 425MB each. When I opened 8 books, it chewed up ~7.4GB of RAM. Admittedly on my desktop, that is about ~12% of the total 64GB RAM but on my laptop, it is forcing memory swapping.

Whereas my method of pre-loading the history only has 1 book open, but leaves a quick way to locate the others without leaving the viewer.
Got RAM like @DNSB, that works. Got minimal RAM? My method. What ever works for your case

This was a nitpick. Calibre already offers so much. Thank you. |
