Downloaded the file. ScrambleEbook replaces images with dummy images the same dimensions since many images could be copyrighted as well.

OTOH, when I look at the scrambled ebook's style sheet (style.css), it is empty. The ebook seems to use only 5 styles (style0, style1, style2, style3 and style4) but they are not defined anywhere in the ePub.

The image used as a separator in the chapters (the 3 dots) is 42px by 7px but the only CSS is the inline height: "100%"

Code:
  <div style="text-align: center;">
    <img src="../Images/image-359764T3.jpg" alt="Image" height="100%"/>
  </div>
Kobo has this book available so you could price match with Amazon or if you have Kobo Plus, it is available there.

Can I fix that by defining styles? I'd have to learn, but I can look at other books to see what to do, right?

This isn't the first book that has had this problem (stretching to fill the page). I find it extremely annoying, so I really want to fix it.

You'd need to change the html code, not the css. That

Code:
height="100%"
in the img tag is the problem. It's instructing the ebook software to display the image at 100% of the height - which the ebook reader is correctly interpreting as the height of the page.

How did this eBook lose the CSS?

The easiest way would be to open the ePub in an editor (Sigil or calibre's ebook-editor) and then do a search/replace.

search:
Code:
height="100%"/>
replace:
Code:
/>
This may result in some images not displaying full page (the front cover image for example),

As to how this book lost the contents of the CSS stylesheet? That is an interesting question. I suspect the original was downloaded as a KFX and converted and the loss happened during the conversion.

Conversion from KFX doesn't delete the css, unless you convert to txt. I convert from KFX to epub all the time. Nothing like this has ever happened.

I've seen a similar effect once using an old version of KFXInput and an error occurred during the conversion. When I set to continue on error, I got a somewhat similar effect. I don't know where the book originated from since most of the identifiers in the .opf are from calibre and metadata downloads.

I did as pdurrant and DNSB suggested, but only for the image in question and I just removed the 100%. It looks fine now. Thank you! TIL to examine both the css and html.

I have no idea why the epub had no css. That's how I rec'd it. A sample from Amz has css. Just as an experiment, I converted the sample to epub and tried copying the css to the epub book. As I'm sure you all expected, it failed to make any change.

@Ma'am-I-Am where did this eBook come from and what format was it in originally before the calibre conversion?
