Black Library (Warhammer) ending downloads

The Warhammer ebook store, blacklibrary.com, is moving to an app next month and the website will close completely in August.

They are promoting it as an exciting new app containing everything you need, but it appears to be a walled garden. They previously offered DRM-free EPUB downloads, but it looks like the books will in future only be readable in the app:

Quote:
Can I upload an ebook I've bought to the ereader I already have? (Kindle, Kobo, Apple iPad etc.)

No but the great thing about the new Black Library App is that it provides everything you need for exploring, reading and listening, all within the App. You can still purchase Black Library eBooks and Audiobooks through alternative vendors to use with your preferred eReader.
It doesn't seem all that long ago that you could only get WH books from Black Library, and now they are pushing ereader users away.

I only have a couple of BL books, but I went to them specifically to avoid giving amazon the middleman cut.

You will still be able to buy Black Library eBooks and audiobooks at other vendors and still read on your preferred Reader.

More enshittification... Oh well, the only BL books I have are the Genevieve books which I picked up via Humble Bundle a while back.

They need to be taken to court for lack of disability access. Someone who relies on desktop programs or needs a different device to access their content is going to be locked out. Not everyone uses smart phones either.

You won't win if you go to court as you can still buy BL eBooks from other vendors.

Would that hold up in court, though?

That's like saying Uber doesn't have to be ADA-compliant because "You could always call a cab instead."

It might hold up in the EU. It won't in the US.

I wish they'd do both, but I rather have a webpage than an app if I have to.choose. Way more compatible...

Web page with DRM eBook needs a connection. No download and read later. If there is no DRM, then it's easy to download web content and use in any program , app or ereader.

However for actual web content, such as Mastodon, I'd rather use a browser than an app.

For a webpage, you need to be online. You probably still cannot read on your Kobo or Kindle.
