Hello!

I have a first gen Kindle Paperwhite (PW), and I'm trying to run KOReader on it, especially now that unregistered PWs can't be registered. Due to being unable to register it, I can't use WinterBreak, so I'm trying to use K5 JailBreak from the Snapshots page.

I downgraded my firmware to 5.3.3, copied over the K5 Jailbreak files, ran the UYK update, and got the "*** Jailbreak ***" text. Reading the previous person's problems, I then also ran the "Update_mkk-20250419-k5-ALL_keystore-install.bin" update.

I then copied over the folders for MRPI, and the "Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7.37_install.bin" for KUAL.

When I type ";log mrpi" into the search bar and press search, the keyboard disapears, and it doesn't go to a search results screen, but I don't see a "Hush little baby..." message, and KUAL does not appear.

My Kindle's file structure is attached as a screenshot.

I then tried adding the "KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2" version of KUAL, and got the error, "This item is not signed by an authorized developer."

I hoped that this is the same issue Sypianski was having, but the updated developer.keystore didn't fix anything.

Has anyone else had this issue, or can see what I've missed / done wrong?

You did or didn't update back to 5.6.1.1 after jailbreak + hotfix install?

Yes, update to the latest firmware. Then reinstall hotfix + 2025 DevCerts update.

My update button is staying greyed out after unzipping to the root. Running KT 5.3.7.3.

Do I have to have my device registered to get it to work?

Hello everyone,

I've got my mother's Paperwhite Kindle (2012) with firmware 5.6.1.1. installed. It has never been jailbroken before, so I assume it's a fresh start. I'm trying to follow instructions from https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/ but get zero results.

I was able to register it on my Amazon account using 6-digit OTP code placed at the end of account password (e.g. Your_Password094567). It registers and shows up in device list, but Kindle store is not loading - Kindle Store encountered an unexpected error. Experimental browser works just fine.

Copying jailbreak files (incl. hidden sandboxed files) and rebooting in aeroplane mode does not trigger Mersquito loading page. Device reset does nothing as I'm not able to open Kindle Store (see error above).

What are my options to jailbreak this 2012 Paperwhite kindle with 5.6.1.1 firmware installed?

You don’t need fancy pants WinterBreak.

I am also trying to jailbreak my PW, it seems 5.6.x is a tricky thing. I am following the thread that explains downgrading: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=264432 but my kindle throws an "error 11" and says the update is bad. I've tried with 5.3.3 and 5.3.4, and with the wait 2+ minutes technique, or use linux "sync"

90d4 = PW2. You can't use firmware bin meant for PW1 since it's model locked. And oldest downloadable firmware for PW2 is 5.4.2.

And even then IIRC PW2 on 5.6+ firmware can't be downgraded simply as PW1 can: by using JUST the "force reboot without ejecting from a computer" trick.

You need to use "Downrader 2.0" / you need to edit /etc/version.txt file that you CAN'T edit without already being jailbroken

So you will need to use appropriate jailbreak for your firmware (and possibly need to UPGRADE to slightly newer firmware in order to be able to use those newer jailbreaks ) that's currently installed on your PW2.
