Linking Calibre with Thorium e-reader (Windows)

I sometimes want to open books from calibre on my pc rather than read on my e-reader or tablet. Examples are chess books where I might have the book open on half the screen and I have a chess program open on the other half so I can play through the moves mentioned in the book. Or books on running with training plans where I have the book on half the screen and Excel on the other half where I am creating my own plan

The in built e-reader is ok in calibre but I find Thorium nicer. I used Google Gemini (basically like chatgpt) and it told me how I could set up calibre so when I double clicked a book it opened in Thorium. I thought I'd share in case useful to others

-------------------

1. Set the Windows Default

First, ensure your computer knows Thorium is the boss for EPUB files.

Right-click any .epub file on your computer.

Select Open with... > Choose another app.

Select Thorium Reader and check the box that says "Always use this app to open .epub files."

2. Configure Calibre to use the System Default

Now you need to tell Calibre to stop using its internal "E-book viewer" and instead hand the file over to the operating system.

Open Calibre and click Preferences (usually in the top toolbar or under the "More" chevron).

Under the Interface section, click on Behavior.

On the right-hand side, look for the column titled "Use internal viewer for:".

Uncheck the box next to EPUB (and any other formats like PDF or MOBI you want Thorium to handle).

Click Apply at the top left and close the Preferences window.

You can also use the Open With PLUGIN to set up multiple alternate actions (including Viewers, graphics editors...), leaving Windows defaults as they were.

Thanks both. It was just the double click and then open in Thorium I wanted. And as Thorium is the only e-reader I need on Windows I didn't mind changing the default.

Your options look good if you want to have the ability to open with a choice of applications
