If it will not work on your Scribe, it will not work on any Kindle. Dictionary format has not changed since the very first one.

Then I am at a loss at what to do.

I was able to find a working .mobi of the Webster 1913 and then run it through KindleUnpack and review the .opf and .html
While I can mimic the .opf to fit for a new dictionary for the Webster 1828, I am not sure how to mimic the .html formatting of the content.

I have this .txt file of the dictionary, but am not sure how to process it to be a proper tab delimited text in order to generate a working dictionary.
Attachment is a zipped .txt file.

After reviewing that text document closer, it's not a complete Webster 1828 dictionary.
I am going to try and unpack a complete .mobi dictionary that isn't working as a lookup dictionary and see if I can convert it to the same format of the working webster 1913 dictionary and check and see if that will work.

Try any of the free Wordnet dictionaries listed on this site: WordNet 3 Easy & Infused

If they still work, your custom dictionary was not correctly formatted.

You can also convert word lists with pyGlossary to Kinde dictionaries.

In order for me to use pyGlossary, what do I need in terms of input? I basically have an unpacked .mobi of the dictionary I want to convert into the working lookup dictionary. So .html and .opf

Any of the supported input files listed on the github page.

If both the .html and the .opf file are correctly formatted, you can simply generate the dictionary with KindleGen. (pyGlossary is only needed for converting word lists and other dictionary formats to Kindle dictionaries.)

BTW, if you unpack a working mobi dictionary using Calibre or KindleUnpack you might not get the required .opf file, because Amazon uses some custom <x-metadata> metadata entries that are usually not restored.

They look like this for a monolingual US English dictionary:

Code:
    <x-metadata>
      <DictionaryInLanguage>en-us</DictionaryInLanguage>
      <DictionaryOutLanguage>en-us</DictionaryOutLanguage>
      <DefaultLookupIndex>default</DefaultLookupIndex>
    </x-metadata>
Without this section, KindleGen will treat the source file like a regular book.

For more information see this website and the Kindle Publishing Guidelines.

is <x-metadata> the actual tag or should it be <metadata>?

If anyone is interested and wants to use a working lookup dictionary of the Webster 1828 Dictionary, here it is.
I know it's kind of niche, but some people may enjoy it.
