Well, by the way of how AUR packages work, updating calibre is still a patching to minimum level. To put it simply:
Else, to explain with it is preferable to always use the official binaries (or at least use it as reference by wraping it): Calibre it quite a big software with a lot of dependencies, with some of them are also python dependencies that require to be complied to improve performances. This also to ensure that this combination of dependencies work without issue. But, this one big single installation with all included dependencies of the official binaires installer has the advantage of being extremely independent of the Linux distributions on wich you try to install it. Is not the very linux way to do like that, but you only have to look at the update table on the official repo -> almost all that not a full wraping of the official bin installer are more or less severly outated. That's fine. You be as (un)harsh as you like and I'll do the same. But to be clear, Jon wasn't "asking" anything about Arch versioning. He was saying the version was wrong. Hence the problem.

Perhaps Jon should be pointed at PKGBUILD in the ArchWiki. It was the first hit on a search on the use of Arch's pkgver-pkgrel in creating package names so not all that much effort to keep one's feet out of one's mouth.

As Jon travels through this forum, it seems he walks through a minefield of coiled snakes, just waiting to strike at the slightest imagined provocation. I'm not sure why that is - maybe something happened before I joined the forum - but I've noticed it for many years. It's not a good look for the forum.

But from my point of view, saddly Jon as the not undeserved reputation to be a bit too "enthusiastic" in his statements, which often leads him to say things that aren't exactly false, but aren't exactly true either, which requires a more experienced user to clarify. EDIT: In itself, this is not a problem; mistakes happen. But combined with his very high level of activity... Last edited by un_pogaz; 02-05-2026 at 06:19 AM. |
