EPUB/PDF Kindle Downloads
I've downloaded a good handful of books marked "Download available in additional formats" using the More Actions dropdown then Download EPUB/PDF. So far, every download comes through as a ZIP. If I drag the ZIP into Calibre, it reads the title and the format reads ZIP. The author and cover art need to be added manually through Edit metadata. To say the process is time consuming doesn't begin to...
Has anyone gotten an actual EPUB or PDF using this process? My default Kindle is the 2022 edition with 16 GB storage, Firmware: Kindle 5.17.1.0.3 (4351890007). I also have a newer 13th generation Fire tablet for those books that won't download to my Kindle reader. I am downloading the "additional formats" to my Windows 11 PC. As I have mentioned before, I like to be able to open all my eBooks using the built-in Calibre reader for reference when writing reviews. |

The zips are actual EPUB. As several people have told you, your browser unilaterally decided it knew best how to name it. All you need to do as a first step is rename it to your_name of_choice.epub.
It still won't have metadata for the author. That is on amazon. I think severa people have given several ways to do something about the metadata. I think pretty much everyone pretty much agrees that amazon has been (needlessly) slipshod about this. |

I have been simply changing the extension to epub when downloading and Calibre recognizes them and extracts the cover. The author metadata still missing, though.

Somewhere earlier in this thread, someone confirmed that the author information is not contained in the epub that Amazon produces, so Calibre has no way to know the author.

I tried downloading the hitchhiker's guide (book 2) but I can only get a PDF... I want the ePub though.
edit: book 1 is available as ePub, no author listed books 2-5 are only available as PDF... mm no thank you. Last edited by Ebookus; 01-25-2026 at 11:15 PM. |

https://www.amazon.com/Restaurant-Un...s%2C315&sr=8-2 I looked at it and it looks perfectly fine to me. It's not a PDF. Or get it from Kobo.uk: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/the...h7w7Iwt&cPos=4 Last edited by Dr. Drib; Yesterday at 07:13 AM. |

Almost every browser allows you to select the option to "choose where to download each time". If you turn that option on, you can change the extension (and the whole name) when you download.

Found an older ebook in my library at Amazon now downloadable as "EPUB/PDF" (like Amazon said).
Downloaded as a .zip, changed extension to .epub – works fine. |

In Chrome type browsers, is there an option not to change the file extension?

For anyone using a browser that changes .epub to .zip, rename the file to .epub before adding the eBook to calibre.

Oddly enough, the fault is Amazon, not Chrome. epubs from other web sites (such a Project Gutenberg) download quite correctly as epubs.
The fault lies in the fact that Chrome tries to fit "unknown" MIME types into standard ones and Amazon's server is not declaring the application/epub+zip MIME type. (Don't trust this gibberish--I got it from Google's AI! Someone with a better understanding of MIME types could probably restate this in English) |
