Same situation here - just dug out the hand crank radio and lantern - not looking forward to existence in the cold dark.

I went to the local grocery store last night to pick up some items for the upcoming snowmageddon. I should have taken some pictures -- I've never seen the shelves so empty. I thought I might pick up some salad, but the only items left in the produce section were bags of kale. It was the same story throughout the store -- the pasta and sauces were almost gone, canned tuna and other goods very picked over, etc.
Anyway, I was able to find enough to give us a comfortable margin. We're not supposed to get very much ice this far north, so the chances of long term power outages are a bit lower (I hope). On the other hand, the latest forecasts are for about 16 inches of snow, and we're not expected to climb above the freezing mark until the first week of February, so it's still going to be rough sledding (in a manner of speaking). Today's high was 35°F and it was very sunny. It was a bit windy, but tolerable. The cold front should move in tonight so tomorrow will be much colder, setting the stage for Sunday's snow. Stay warm and safe out there! |

Here in northern New England we're way above the ice belt, but oh, my! The predicted cold and snow. The cold worries me more; if it takes me a few days to dig out from a couple of feet of snow, there's no place I need to go. But there's always potential disaster lurking in protracted sub-zero temps and two feet of snow in the driveway would mean I couldn't get out.
I'm channeling Pa Ingalls hunkering down in a snow bank for days and hoping it doesn't come to that. |

A bit of good news, in Central NJ, the forecast has changed dramatically. We went from 8-12 inches of snow followed by 0.25 inch of freezing rain to just 5-7 inches of snow with a trace of freezing rain.
Of course, anything can happen. The forecaster sometimes gets it wrong. |

Yes, the ice is something to worry about as temps will remain below freezing for several days. The snow is expected to start around 6am Sunday.

8" of snow and counting, the snow will continue in our area until 8:00pm or so. Temps in the low 20's. Pretty much everything is cancelled, schools have already cancelled tomorrow as well. We've got nowhere to be, except to walk across the street later to visit with our neighbors. He just cleared out driveway...hubby is still recovering from back surgery so he can't so anything like that yet.
This is a huge storm, I feel for the folks dealing with ice and power outages. |

A chilly start to the week. It's just below 0℃ (6am) and this afternoon it'll go up to 3℃. It'll be a cloudy, but dry, day.
Tomorrow afternoon we're in for a rainy afternoon and evening, with similar temperatures. After that it'll get a little bit warmer during the day, but there's a chance of rain every day. At least the days are getting longer and when I get out of work (where I can't see any daylight) it's still light for a little while. |

The National Weather Service called it just about perfectly for my neighborhood. We got a total of 10 inches of light, powdery snow. It snowed for most of the day but we never really got any sleet or freezing rain. As the snow tapered off we had an icy mist -- no real ice build up on any surfaces. The high temperature for the day was 20°F but that's misleading. The temperature was rising throughout the day and we hit 20 at midnight. Our afternoon temperatures were in the low to mid teens.
We'll have someone out to clear the driveway tomorrow. |
