Gallery 3 sure looks like it would solve the resolution/brightness (and even washed-out colors) issue:

The worrisome thing is the date of that announcement: April of last year. That's about the time the Sage disappeared from the US Kobo site. I wonder if they were planning to update that to a Gallery 3 screen and something bad happened. A Gallery 3 Sage with a bigger battery would be just fine. But, I'm finding references to only one or two devices using Gallery 3 since then.

The main problem with Gallery 3 devices is that the screen refresh even in the newer panels is slow if you want maximum colour quality. It still takes ~1 second to refresh the display which is an improvement over the 10 seconds the original Gallery 3 panels took but still slow. In B&W mode, the refresh time drops to 350ms which is close to that of a Carta 1000 display. These times are for a full screen refresh which thanks to Regal technology are not needed as often.

I'd be OK with those refresh times if Kobo would use it for a new 7" Reader.

sorry, but can someone explain Gallery 3 to me?

from a quick web search, it appears to have "died" around late 2024, whatever that means? has anything changed since?

I watched only the ReMarkable device, as within Gallery 3 screens, if this video can help...

In there there are some comparisons on the color's rendition through different e-screens technologies: Color E-Ink That Actually Looks Good: Reflection Frame with E-Ink Spectra 6
(the Spectra is not for ereaders, as yet it's very slow on refresh rates).
It was posted on this discussion: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...=369812&page=2

I don't know about the others devices with Gallery 3, I know the ReMarkable has had an upgrade to allow front light to be rised more.
Ps: I wasn't to know a laser, printed page has 1200 dpi.
Pps: pardon, but now I don't know if the videos can be seen enbeeded or if they requires to be watched on YouTube.
Edit: I wasn't to know there was a Gallery 3 1st version: as on the Bingme Galy, and a 2nd version, as into the ReMarkable Paper Pro.
