@Kovid - how about a shortcut to toggle the Look and Feel->User interface colors->Color palette setting between Light and Dark. Similar to the shortcut for Wide and Narrow.

I didn't want to talk about it because I haven't started working on it yet, and so no promise about, but due to the every rendered nature of the bookshelf (except of the srollbar, everthing is done by calibre), we have a deep control on it and I think we can localy override the theme for it. I even think I can reimplement the custom backgroud like the gridview (but only the background, shelves will be not customizable).

Released version 0.99.7 with the following changes:

* Bookshelf: Options to control the appearance of the group by dividers
* Bookshelf: Fix a rare freeze reported by ownedbycats and Cmfy.n
* Bookshelf: Fix a bug in the previous release that broke bookshelves when using empty title template
* Preferences->Look & feel allow right clicking on the sections in the list to restore defaults for just that section
* Various minor bug fixes

The fix for the freeze was actually quite large involving me writing a parser
of the GNU gettext .mo format file in C++ from scratch. Lets hope I didn't break
anything, testing by people using calibre in non-English languages would be
great.

This fix seems OK now.

I did notice the following error when closing calibre portable because I'm now always running the beta in debug mode.
Code:
1.88] Started up in 1.88 seconds with 9 books
[148.81] Shutdown starting...
[148.83] Shutdown message shown...
[148.84] Grid view shutdown
[148.84] Bookshelf view shutdown
[148.84] Actions shutdown
[149.04] Various services shutdown
[149.04] Metadata backup shutdown
[149.04] Current database closed
[149.06] Windows hidden
[149.08] Waiting for overseers and live to shutdown
[149.08] Shutdown complete in 0.27, quitting...
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "calibre\gui2\preferences\look_feel_tabs\bookshelf_view.py", line 174, in count_scan_needed
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'new_api'
Press any key to continue . . .
I don't know how much (if at all) it matters but I thought I'd better mention it.

ETA: @un_pogaz thank you for adding the cover opacity customisation

Using the latest Spanish beta, everything is running smoothly.
I've noticed that double-clicking on the spine opens the metadata editing window. I checked if it was a keyboard shortcut change, but I didn't find anything. I think double-clicking should open the book viewer. Or there's some setting I'm missing. I'm amazed by the work you're doing; congratulations to those leading this project!

I assume this tweak applies to all 3 views of the Library

Yes.
double-clicking use the tweak "doubleclick_on_library_view" and so behave in the same way than for the grid view. So if you want to open the book, you need to change the tweak "doubleclick_on_library_view" to 'open_viewer'.

@jackie_w: Fixed by https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...536de6d622207e its harmless indeed.

@dunhill: This is controlled by Preferences->Tweaks->Control behavior of book list->double_click_on_library_view the default is to open the viewer.

If the cover browser is enabled, double-clicking on it opens the book viewer.
As for tweaks, they are the same in previous versions.

My freeze was resolved

It would be nice if there was way to generate all the spine-images for cache without scrolling through

Would also be nice for long titles to wrap to 2 lines if second line not utilized

@un_pogaz Don't worry about it, just for me, I have a solution… that has broader applicability.

I can do what I want — "Toggle Light/Dark mode" — with Shift+Alt+L (custom), Tab (dunno why), Alt+P, Up/Down arrow, Enter. It's quick, no rendering of books, just a paint job on the shelves

For User Interface plugins, can they please be allowed to be disabled? I would not mind having to select to disable and then have to restart calibre. It makes it difficult to beta test when you want to disable an interface plugin without having to delete it.
