If I perform a clean install of calibre portable beta and not upgrade from 8.16.100, the program works as expected. It doesn't crash when I make changes.
However, I then don't have any settings restored or plugins installed either.
Upgrading appears to be the issue and probably incompatible plugins.

Switching to another open program seems to cause the crash too.
Slightly different issue. I changed shelf height (405 px, about two rows on my 1920x1080 screen), and when I closed preferences and switched to shelf view Calibre just outright froze up. No CPU usage, though high memory utilization.

It may have to do with # of books visible because I can't reliably replicate it on my smaller VLs.

If I make changes to the bookshelf view while in list mode, calibre doesn't crash.
I can only make it crash by making those changes while in bookshelf mode.
My test system has 62 books in it.

@ownedbycats: I have noticed a deadlock (which will manifest as a freeze to the user), not a crash, on my windows test system, but I only managed to trigger it once. Unfortunately without a reproducer deadlocks are rather hard to fix. Simply changing shelf height while not in shelf view and then switching doesnt seem to trigger it for me.

The rounded books look terrible. Please don't do any rounding.

I took these warnings and looked up lines 415 and 416 in statistics.py. What I found looks to me like it's a calibre issue and not a plugin issue.

Code:
calibre_plugins.count_pages.statistics:415: SyntaxWarning: "\D" is an invalid escape sequence. Such sequences will not work in the future. Did you mean "\\D"? A raw string is also an option.
calibre_plugins.count_pages.statistics:416: SyntaxWarning: "\D" is an invalid escape sequence. Such sequences will not work in the future. Did you mean "\\D"? A raw string is also an option.
Code:
    get_cbz_page_count('''C:\Dev\Tools\eclipse\workspace\_Misc\misery-depot.zip''')
    get_cbr_page_count('''C:\Dev\Tools\eclipse\workspace\_Misc\misery-depot.cbr''')
Taking out those two lines caused the warnings to stop appearing.

I also took a look at the SyntaxWarning for Favorites Menu and again it's a false positive. So I think the others may be false as well.

It also seems that the KoboTouch driver now has some errors. How do I know if it's safe to connect my Kobo to the beta with the errors or should I wait unit they are fixed?

1) Is the dividers, not the books (but I admit that I didn't choose the grouping where the distinction is easiest to make)
2) The purpose to have rounded corner is to make them more distinctive from the books precisely, but maybe have the hand too heavy on this.

This warning are due to the Python updating in Calibre 9. Some things previous tolerated in string syntax and escape characters will soon not longer be tolerated.
And this warnings are raise from the plugin it self, so not to calibre to fix.

Sorry, but rounded corners also do not work. The books cannot be rounded in any way. It does not look good at all.

It is for calibre to fix the warnings. The warnings are false positives. They aren't errors.

The only errors I'm seeing are in KoboTouch (part of calibre) and the Annotations plugin because the imp module is no longer there. Put back imp and Annotations is fixed.

The only thing I don't know for sure is if the KoboTouch error is due to the error with the Bookself. The Bookshelf has been fixed. I just need a new build to test. The bookshelf and KoboTouch.

@ownedbycats: If you can consistently reproduce the freeze, would you be willing to share your library with me so I can try to reproduce it as well. That might help to finally nail this sucker down. I have been trying to reproduce it in various ways for days now and failing.
