Seeing as how the Walmart partnership is long since dissolved...
Would there be any adverse impact in changing the code in the affiliate.conf file on my Clara HD to remove the Walmart splash-screen? Do we think a future firmware update would reset/restore the affiliate flag?

There is no adverse impact. The only thing is that it reverted to walmart after a firmware upgrade, and I couldn't be arsed to do it again.
As for your second question: I don't think the behavior (=reverting on firmware upgrade) would change, although I hope it would. |

You can even set a different affiliate if you want to try out different branding.

The vendor advised me to edit the affiliate.conf file so that "affiliate=fnac" reads "affiliate=" and reboot. I did. Unfortunately, further attempts to register the e-reader to my Kobo UK account failed in the same way as previously: error messages involving fnac. Examining the affiliate.conf file revealed that something had rewritten it, returning it to its previous state - i.e., it again read "affiliate=fnac". I went round the loop three times, just to make sure that I hadn't done something wrong (not that there's a lot of scope for it), with identical results. I ended up returning the device to the vendor (who was, to be fair, pretty good about it). |
