Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was a Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. The title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. She published 20 novels as well as 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays. Her writing is often classified as “juvenile fiction“, but adults remain faithful readers. Virtually all her writings remain in print today.
