I don't speak the intermediate languages you used, but I assume they all have something closer to "penny-pinch" than "save money". This is the kind of nuance that is lost when not using a human.

"Save money" is a neutral expression. "Penny-pinch" is much more pejorative.

Likewise, there is "glaring gaps" vs. "obvious shortcomings". The LLM translation is much more neutral, thus losing meaning.

Actually, the English translation while not exact reads well and keeps the meaning. I see nothing wring with the English translation vs the original quote.

It does strip out the nuance and feeling of the original though. Which is find for a post, but could change the feeling of a work of fiction.

DeepL is no longer in the same league as the new wave of AI. You are underestimating how well OpenAI etc handle implied meaning and complex concepts; it goes far beyond simple word-swapping.

If this flies, then why bother with the originals at all? Just get the AI to produce the entire novel if nobody cares about the literary quality. Of course, the same penny pinching can be done be readers wondering why they need the publishers if AI can generate novels for them.

What do you mean, no longer in the same league? It uses transformer architecture the same as the LLM-based chatbots / text generators.
