Why is page sync so flaky on Paperwhite?

I have two Paperwhites, color and monochrome. I also have two iPads and an iPhone. Why does the Kindle app on any Apple device instantly ask to sync to the last page read (even if it was on a Paperwhite), but the actual Kindles mostly seem unaware of my reading the book on another device? Occasionally it works just like the app, but more often than not, the Kindle (either one, they both do this) just acts like the page I'm on is the right one.

I searched the forum and I don't see anyone asking this question, but it happens all the time to me.

Naturally, all the devices are connected to Wifi and so forth. If I go to the menus and pick "sync" to sync manually, it doesn't change anything.

Have you tried tapping on the 3 vertical dots on the right hand side and then tapping "Sync to Furthest Page Read"? That's what works for me.
