Reader for drm removal

I read on my mac in "other then" kindle reader. As far as I can tell drm removal for the osx is currently dead. So, can someone lead me to a setup for drm removal? Starting from scratch, which e reader and version, software and version, etc. There is probably an existing thread but I can't find it.

Currently, all eink Kindles no longer receiving updates, that is, up to and including the Oasis 3 from 2019. The safest would be pre-KFX models - Kindle Keyboard, basic Kindles with buttons from 2011-2012 and Kindle Touch from 2011.

Any version of Calibre and deDRM 10.0.9 or alpha.

It's actually easier to by from Kobo.com and use calibre with DeDRM and the ACSM Input plugin to download the ePub and remove DRM. This way you won't have to try to find a used old Kindle that's not blacklisted.

Using that method, you don't have to buy anything other then the eBooks.

You can usually price match at Kobo so it's not an issue.

Yes, provided the book is available on Kobo. The big problem is that many, many Kindle ebooks are not available on the Kobo website because the writers are tied into the Amazon Kindle ecosystem. I have recently been transitioning from Kindle to Kobo and found that only about half of the books I look for are even available on the Kobo website.

There are a lot of posts about the pluses and minuses of the Kindle and Kobo devices but it seems to me that the real question is about book availability. Amazon self published books are often only available on the Kindle and some of those are really very, very good.

I signed up for both the Kindle and Kobo sale notifications but I have to say that the Kindle sales are often far better - a far richer set of books to choose from and lower prices.

Only if you're used to buying all your books from one place and download them directly to your device. I've never done that. I've always bought my books from several different stores - depending on where it was cheaper or where it was available. I sideload everything from calibre, nothing gets downloaded directly from the store to my ereaders. So book availability plays no part whatsoever in my decision to buy this ereader or that.

Sure. If the book is available anyplace other than from one source. But since Amazon locks some authors into selling only on the Kindle platform you can not get those books from any other place. And, as far as I can tell, new Kindle books cannot be used on any other platform than Kindle.

The DRM can be removed, and there is more than one method available.

I am not in any way an expert on this sort of thing but as far as I know, and as far as I have seen on YouTube, the pre-existing methods for removing the DRM protection from Kindle books no longer work on the currently available Amazon eBooks. Perhaps I am wrong about that - as I said I am no expert on this - but all of the newest videos I have seen say that the old methods no longer work. If that is incorrect perhaps you could explain?

The point I was trying to make is that it is not possible to buy these books from other eBook vendors if they are only available from Amazon through Kindle. Amazon is said to hold 80% of the eBook market and I assume that much of that is due to many of the books are only available from Kindle due to the authors being locked into the Amazon ecosystem.

There is a relatively new method using Kindle for PC (Windows only) and you can also use any eink Kindle up to and including the Oasis 3 (2019) to liberate your Kindle books. Yes, the new books as well. I've bought and converted for my Kobos quite a lot of recently published Kindle books.

Just to reiterate, since I've been switching from Kindle to Kobo for DRM purposes mostly:
If you own or buy an old-enough Kindle, you can download books to that Kindle and upload to Calibre for DeDRM if you have the standard DeDRM set up.
On the other hand, for books that are available on Kobo, the process can be as simple as using the download button on Kobo to download to the folder on you computer that you have told Calibre add books from.

Given that, I guess I gave some of those posts too much credence. Thank you for clarifying all of this.
