That is different from what I remember reading about the new Kindle Paperwhites. If I remember correctly the article (or YouTube video, I don't remember) said that the files were invisible when the device was hooked up to a computer. So perhaps the new Kindle Gen 12 is still usable.

There have been sporadic reports of books not showing up when sideloading the older AZW3/KF8 format. However the cause is currently undetermined and it seems to still work for some people. I suspect a subtle problem in some AZW3 files created using calibre is triggering a new bug in the Kindle software.
OK. But what about mobi format? Or ePUB?

The newer Kindles use MTP instead of USB Mass Storage to connect to your computer. The MTP connection hides quite a few directories that were visible using USBMS.

A couple of people have mentioned that mobi shows the same issues for them as KF8/azw3. As for ePub? Unless you have jailbroken your Kindle and install KOReader, your Kindle will not natively open an ePub. Using a calibre conversion or Send to Kindle would be your only choices.

A lot of people making videos and social media posts almost completely misunderstand and/or misrepresent what is going on. And, it then filters through other people and their confusion becomes myth that is treated like truth.

Yes. Most importantly the folder that contains the cover thumbnails shown in the library view is no longer accessible on some devices. That can prevent covers from showing for sideloaded books that pretend to be sourced by Amazon (cdetype=EBOK). However the folders containing actual books are still readable and writable.

There is also the confounding factor of new DRM present in newer Kindle firmware that prevents extracted books from being usable. The situation is complicated and misinformation circulating.
