Add half a page for each of these is not a bad tradeoff when in any imae heavy books, such as, say calibre news downloads, or technical books, or history books with images, it causes undercounts.
I've seen a lot of eBooks that use graphic images to deal with special characters. So these graphics that takes the place of text will get 1000 characters when they are a lot smaller. Can that sort of thing be fixed?

No, probaly not. First one because it doesn't really make sense to have different algorithms for such similar format.
And frankly, the ADE pages is not that great because it use the xhtml file size, wich lead to count also indent space and the tag itself. It not that much, but can be better.
ADE page numbers is the most reasonable page number format we have for eBooks. It works well and once you get used to it, you get a good sense of how long an eBook is. It's the best page number count there is for eBooks.

Do you have a better way to count pages in an eBook?

Here's an example: https://github.com/mawise/bookshelf?...e#3d-bookshelf. I don't know if you've seen it. But what they did in Calibre is really good. My congratulations to un_pogaz and Kovid for the implementation.

I've noticed that double-clicking on the book's cover or spine doesn't open the Calibre reader.

@JSWolf Yeah, it's right that ADE method avoid to overestimate page size because it ignore image, but I'm meh on that, found it naive.

Honestly, I don't think we'll never find a satisfactory method for calculating the page count. Each method are it up and down with their own compromise, and we will never be able to check all the boxes in ones.

Calibre has it method, and even though I am critical on the 1000 length for <img>, I will not oppose to Kovid's wishes on that. That the compromise of Calibre Page. We can probably tweak around but the core will stand as it.

If we want other methods, their is Count Page plugin that can provide them and the user are not required to use the Calibre Page column for the spines or any page count column, their can use any column of their choice in a relative trivial way. Or even go deeper and do what they want for the spine width generation because is template powered.

Personaly, I will look if and how I cound implement my altenative version I have in mind into Count Page, but no promises.
Subject close for me.

I have a nitpick about the the UX of the shelf view:

When I ctrl-click a selected book to UNselect it, the selected list and (selected book count) changes appropriately, but the purple highlight rectangle does not disappear.

Happens with hover on or off.

Double clicking on the book cover works for me though with the usual delay from running from source. I can't double click on the spine with my current setup since as soon as I hover on the spine, the book switches to cover view.

I'm finding that it's taking the beta longer to close then 8.16.2. I am using the backup plugin for both.

I am not really interested in the bookshelf view, but I do wonder if the text along the spine needs to be flipped 180deg.

Normally you read spines from the left, but in bookshelf view they are orientated to read from the right.

In the bookshelf view preference, have you tried checking the spine text downwards box?

There is no standard. My paperback collection spines face both ways. Worse the covers end upside down on some when you align the directions . (for my shelving purposes the Logo is upright )

My CD collection suffers the same condition.

Interesting, even the same brand and Artist can't stay consistent, RCA published the Moody Blues in Quad Open Reel With the Logo at top of the spine, some are right face and other left face
Looking at my DVD and Blueray, they might have finally settled, the Majority are the same way (maybe 2% wrong).

In the Calibre case, Kovid is not using 'Publishers Spines' (but just you wait, there WILL be outcries that they can't be used ) so he could waste his effort (see my comment on gripers) making them a single direction.

I noticed it too. I don't use the backup plugin, so the difference is like a second or so. Still noticeable.

The purple highlight indicates the current book, regardless of selection. This is somewhat controversial since the other views dont behave this way, they dont have a current book indication at all, however in the shelf view because of the hover effect I thought it might be useful to indicate the current book, since hovering expands whatever book is under the mouse, rather than the current book. That said I am not wedded to the concept, if people find it bothersome I am happy to take it out and have it behave like the other views.
