If anyone is buying a new Kindle and is thinking of trading in an old Kindle for the discount, don't do it You need the old Kindle to download eBooks to be able to remove the DRM.

I'm still able to do this with my Kindle Oasis 3. (However, perhaps it's only because not all of the newest firmware has yet to be downloaded [if it is still being downloaded], even though - as you mention above about available space... I have about 30 megs of free space and so far it works.)

The Oasis 3 hasn't gotten the updates with hardened DRM at all, full or not, and maybe never will.

Exactly. Very good advice. Or specifically buy an old kindle on ebay for that purpose.

IMHO, eBay is too much of a risk of a blacklisted Kindle. I bought the Kindle Touch I have from shopgoodwill.com. This was back before they turned into an auction site. However, looking at the site now, they do have some Kindles. But the selection is pretty poor. They also call the Fire tablet a Kindle.

Sometimes the price at Amazon is considerably lower than elsewhere, and Kobo only price matches in a few select countries. Not in my country, for example.

I guess that's a reasonable concern. I used to recommend "just wait for the library to get the book to save money". But that's become a real joke lately. Here's a book and it's companion audiobook I just put on hold recently. I hope I'm still alive when I finally get my shot at it.

No library books on Kobo or Kindle here at all. Only in proprietary apps.

That book isn’t due to be released for several weeks. I have found that many libraries purchase additional copies once a book becomes available based on the size of the queue at that point. That could drastically reduce the wait time.

We can certainly hope!

I have also found that once a book is released, the Overdrive "Holds" section of your account tells you your place in line and how many copies are available. Prior to the release date, they do not tell you how many copies there will be (at least my libraries don't give out that information, other libraries might though).

For the big libraries I belong to, they try to keep it to a 5-8 book wait time per person in line.

My smaller library has very long wait times for popular titles.

A couple of waiting to be purchased books at my local library are currently showing massive wait times since the calculation is based on 1 copy and a 21 day loan period. This will change once the library purchases the book since they tend to purchase multiple copies for long wait time books. One recent purchase which I was interested in went from a 62 week wait time to a 10 week wait time and shows 0 of 6 copies available. One other book which my spouse was interested in now shows a 6 week wait time with 0 of 13 copies available. The library is part of a consortium so most of the smaller libraries in the province will show the same results. Another library that is not part of the consortium shows 14 copies with 110 holds so about a 16 week wait time on the second book.

I feel I should mention that none of those books are available for Amazon format loans since I am not a resident of the USA.

The questions this raises for me is if you can't see the books on your Gen 12 Kindle when hooked up to your computer can you still side load new books onto the Kindle? Can you see the folder that holds the books and just not the books themselves? And if you can't see the folder how could you side-load books into it?

The premise is wrong. You can still access the book files when connected to a computer, even with the latest firmware installed.

Yes. At the moment it seems to work properly if KFX format is used.

There have been sporadic reports of books not showing up when sideloading the older AZW3/KF8 format. However the cause is currently undetermined and it seems to still work for some people. I suspect a subtle problem in some AZW3 files created using calibre is triggering a new bug in the Kindle software.
