Lost Library Access on NAS
I know NAS storage is discouraged but I have been doing it since Windows XP as the only person on my NAS and it has worked well. All of a sudden I can't see my library on Calibre with Win 11 although I was able to last week. Looks fine on File Explorer and can even see .caltrash (which seems to be empty including sub folders)
calibre, version 8.15.0 ERROR: Unhandled exception: <b>PermissionError</b>:[WinError 5] Access is denied: '\\\\PALIMPSEST\\Cloud_Nein\\Calibre Library2\\.caltrash' calibre 8.15 embedded-python: True Windows-10-10.0.26200-SP0 Windows ('64bit', 'WindowsPE') ('Windows', '10', '10.0.26200') Python 3.11.14 Windows: ('10', '10.0.26200', 'SP0', 'Multiprocessor Free') Interface language: None EXE path: C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibre.exe Successfully initialized third party plugins: DeDRM (10, 0, 9) && Standard Ebooks (1, 0, 0) Traceback (most recent call last): File "calibre\startup.py", line 63, in slot File "calibre\gui2\actions\choose_library.py", line 332, in <lambda> File "calibre\gui2\actions\choose_library.py", line 773, in switch_requested File "calibre\gui2\ui.py", line 974, in library_moved File "calibre\db\legacy.py", line 191, in __init__ File "calibre\db\legacy.py", line 45, in create_backend File "calibre\db\backend.py", line 548, in __init__ File "calibre\db\backend.py", line 2215, in ensure_trash_dir PermissionError: [WinError 5] Access is denied: '\\\\PALIMPSEST\\Cloud_Nein\\Calibre Library2\\.caltrash' Is this due to a Win 11 update? Is the problem with .caltrash? |

Make sure the that folder has the same rights as the rest in the Library.
But, you really are taking a risk with a WORKING Library on the network. It is not all just about multiple access issues. |

Try running calibre in Windows safe mode.
If calibre works there then it's highly likely that a 3rd party program that's run at startup is generating the error. And I have lost count of posts that contain the statement "…it (calibre on network storage) has been working for years until now…" BR Last edited by BetterRed; 12-30-2025 at 05:41 PM. |

solved
Vituperation unhelpful, solution follows-
Problem caused by unfathomable entanglement of Win 11 user and group permissions with inheritance applied to linux filesystem in NAS. So- Create Library3 Robocopy Library2 to 3 without permissiohns (default) Verify copy with winmerge Delete Library2 Rename Library3 Library2 Bob's your uncle |

I didn't see any vituperation. OTOH, I agree that using SQLite on a database on a network connected drive is an unnecessary risk. The creators of SQLite do not recommend it, the author of calibre does not recommend it and the users here have posted too often about running into issues with having their calibre library on a network connected drive.
As @BetterRed said, most of those message do include that the user has done this for years before bad things happened. |
