New Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 32KB

I purchased a new Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. When I plug it in to my Windows 11 laptop to add my newest books to Calibre as I've always done, the books do not appear. The only way I can add them to Calibre is to have them delivered to my old Kindle. Is there a setting I need to change either on my new device or in Calibre?

You can no longer download books from your kindle to a PC. That was stopped years ago. The latest model that will be treated as a hard drive, and give you a file you can liberate in Calibre is the 5th Gen Paperwhite, which is the Paperwhite 1. The newest generations are the 12th Gen.

That's not quite true. You can still transfer and liberate books from Kindles up to and including the 2019 Oasis. You just need to connect it directly to calibre, not just to your PC, and you need the KFX Input plugin. Later Kindles use hardened DRM which has not been cracked.

You cannot deDRM books downloaded to the 11th and 12th generation Kindles. Amazon changed their DRM recently.

Thank you for your replies. I'll just keep my old Kindle handy for adding new books to Calibre.

Yes, keep it handy. I'm thinking of getting a newer kindle, but keeping my oasis for just that purpose.

This needs a bit more clarification: You can DeDRM ebooks on any Kindle running firmware 5.18.4 or lower. The confusion/split is that only 11th and 12th gen Kindles are still getting updates to 5.18.5 and higher, and those are the versions that use a new uncracked DRM. They might still be lower, but unless you take specific steps to prevent it, they could automatically update at any time.

Those preventing steps can only be taken with jailbroken Kindles, isn't it so? Unless you jailbreak, there's nothing you can do.

To add to your question, wasn't there some discussion about keeping a Kindle almost full, which will keep an update from occurring?

Yes, but then you can't download new books either.

From what I recall, the amount of free space would allow downloading of new books, depending on what you are downloading; 50MB-100MB free space.

In that case, yes. But wouldn't keeping your Kindle almost full slow it down? I admit I have no idea if it would. It used to considerably slow down old Kindles from 2010-2011, as I dimly recall, but maybe that's no longer the case.

My 32GB Kobos aren't even half full, so I don't know how a modern ereader would behave if it was almost full.

Mabe if you are filling the space up with books? I would guess that just having one really large file wouldn't slow it down; just a guess.

There have been several reports of newer Kindles that had less that 100MB of free space still installing firmware updates. At least one report was that a large file intended to chew up storage was removed by the update. One other report suggested was that books were being removed and re-added after the firmware update.

For my Clara HD with a 128GB µSD card, I had a very noticeable slowdown when the database exceeded the RAM size after I had added about 12,000 books.

I wasn't specific enough: I didn't mean so full nothing can be downloaded.

I meant keep 20-30 megs or so available for downloading:

Purchase ebook
Turn on wifi
download ebook
Turn off wifi (be quick! )
connect to computer and calibre
strip drm
Grin

I'm still able to do this with my Kindle Oasis 3. (However, perhaps it's only because not all of the newest firmware has yet to be downloaded [if it is still being downloaded], even though - as you mention above about available space... I have about 30 megs of free space and so far it works.)
