Two things: 1. Why do I keep seeing questions about KFX output? Kindle devices can still read mobi and azw(#) files. If you download a book you bought ages ago, it will be some form of KFX. If you want to read a new KFX book, just download it to your device.

And 2: Is anybody working on a deDRM for the KFX-ZIP files. What make some files come through as KFX and others KFX-Zip. JFX files can be read directly in Calibre, can be converted to epub or mobi so Count Pages works. It's the KFX-ZIP files that are driving ME crazy.

1. Some people want to read their sideloaded books in the KFX format.

2. There are no separate KFX and KFX-ZIP formats. If you're getting KFX-ZIP, that means your deDRM setup is not working. Some books have no DRM to begin with. What method are you using to deDRM Kindle books?

KFX is the eBook with no DRM.

KFX-ZIP is either an incomplete KFX or the DRM could not be removed. Sometimes the KFX is not fully downloaded when it's being added to calibre. Also, some just copy the .kfx file and not the other pieces. On a Kindle, KFX is not a single file.

There is a new DRM that DeDRM cannot remove. The new Kindle firmware supports this new DRM. So does K4MAC. K4PC has it as well, but there is a way to remove the DRM which is Windows only.

MOBI is a terrible old format that has little use today unless you have a very old Kindle that only supports it. Now the main use is as a dual-format container for comics, etc.

That's most likely because Kindle Create was used to create those eBooks. Kindle Create is garbage.

It's not something I have under control. Except that I don't buy books at Amazon anymore.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I almost stopped buying comics from there when they completed the merge with ComiXology (bought a few to follow a series or two, but never like before), because I couldn't download my favorite Image Comics anymore (they were always DRM-free) and save them locally. I might look again, if Image still makes them DRM-Free!

Sirtel: I'm using the following plugins

DeDrm 10.0.9
Gather KFX-ZIP (from KFX import) 2.27.1
KFX Input (2.27.1)

Here is how I get these new books into Calibre:

1. Send books to your Kindle device (I can't say whether this works if you don't have a device)
2. Once the books appear as downloaded on the device, plug the device into your computer
3. When the File Explorer window opens, navigate to documents > Downloads > Items01
4. Select all the books with the .KFX extension. (If you are reading a book in the list, deselect it - [Ctrl + click])
5. Open Calibre and drag and drop the selected books to Calibre. The new entries should have a KFX format.
If you see a KFX.ZIP format, you need to delete that item and resend it to your device.

Early on, this worked on all the books I sent to Calibre. Now, at least 2/3 of the books come across as KFX-ZIP. I currently have 94178 items in my Kindle library. I've been using Calibre to catalog all my books - not just Kindle - with little to no difficulty until this Amazon bit of hell came along.

And which model is your Kindle? The recent updates disabled the DRM removal for newer models. You need an older model no longer receiving updates, if you want to continue using this method.

You do know that you can set Calibre to recognize the Kindle when it is connected, and then go to the "Device" tab in Calibre, find the book, right click and select "Add to Library" to do this, don't you?

In the end, these approaches should work the same way but doing it inside Calibre seems much easier to me.

As Sirtel said, you need a Kindle not getting firmware updates as DRM cannot be removed from the new firmware.
