Personally, I just use Sigil's Preview and the optional BibiReader, EpubJSReader and ReadiumReader plugins to get an idea of what the ePub is going to look like.
That was the first thing I tried. I had the thought that it might be taking it from the <guide> section of the content.opf, or maybe the toc.ncx now that I think about it...

Can't be bothered trying to figure it out because it's only for the boy so long as I can just dump in the epub and have them work, I'm happy

Calibre still added and changed a bunch in your .azw3 file though: the css file line-length is 50% longer, though it's been less aggressive in adding/changing classes...no doubt because you were so nicely concise to begin with... They mostly looked the same with tiny minor differences--no doubt due to how the Calibre editor rendered it eh.

So what is different in an azw3 file? Just an epub/rar with content.opf renamed to metadata.opf...? Which is "better" for Kindle--azw3 or kf8?

Whoa, Sigil 0.5.3? I thought I was bad, refusing to move on from 0.8.1
Did you try the Star Trek eBook I posted? it's a conversion from the ePub to KF8 using calibre. Don't load it into calibre. Just load it on your Kindle once it's plugged into the computer. Put it in the documents directory.

KF8 is the official name for .azw3 files.

Yes I did. I looked inside both the files with the Calibre editor tool... Even your azw3 had a couple of items added.

It seems there's no way to convert an epub to azw3 without the Calibre converter--all the online tools I tried added Calibre stuff to the file...!

It seems any global declaration gets added to every single instance of class thereafter, so even though my file only had "nonindent" and "right" as classes, it created a dozen additional classes for i, big, small, sigil_class_not_in_toc for each h-tag etc etc Disabling font scaling in the conversion helps limit the number, but the global hyphenation declaration (for example) still gets added to every single class--seems Calibre doesn't allow those...

You can use Kindlegen to convert ePub to AZW3 without Calibre. A few years ago Amazon removed it from direct download. I think it's still bundled with Kindle Previewer, you can read a bit more about how to get it here:

I've got 3.6 Previewer for MacOS...

Think I'd rather live with Calibre or my mobis

KF8 has no hyphenation. So it is best to use Hyphenate This!.

The thing is, when you look at the KF8 with the calibre editor, the editor will update the metadata so it will change what's there. You can turn this off for ePub, but not KF8.

Try the following KF8. I created it with Kindlegen and then used KindleUnpack to split it so I could remove the Mobi. Then I used Hyphenate This! to add in soft hyphens. This one should work. No calibre conversion was involved.

But because you say the other KF8 I posted didn't work, I think you're Kindle may be defective in some way.

Suit yourself. Personally I think Kindlegen does a better job for ePub to AZW3 conversion than Calibre.

As long as you have the settings correct, I don't think you'd notice a difference in most cases.

No I meant in the stylesheet

It worked fine--I only looked at it in Calibre though. Then I tried my book and the global declaration made a mess of it
