What might be possible is if an ePub was used to make the Kindle version, then we could get the source ePub. That would be the best way to do it. |

JHowell's speculation at post 18 of this thread seems the most likely way Amazon will produce ebups, for the reasons he gives there. |

I don't think Amazon will ever provide truly DRM-free KFX. They should have done so all along for books that are suppose to be sold DRM-free.

Yes. Use calibre with the KFX Output plugin.

Personal documents created using send-to-kindle are also delivered using DRM-free KFX.
Personally I don't see Amazon switching to that format for books that publishers have designated as DRM-free. As was pointed out they could have done that from the beginning. I believe that allowing downloads of EPUB and PDF is a specific carve out to meet customer and publisher demand and that Amazon will continue their efforts to lock down the rest of the Kindle ecosystem. |

Received this today from Amazon for their self-publishing program (KDP)
"Starting January 20, 2026, Amazon will make it easier for readers to enjoy content they have purchased from the Kindle store across a wider range of devices and applications by allowing new titles published without Digital Rights Management (DRM) to be downloaded in EPUB and PDF format. If you take no action, the DRM-status of your previously published titles will not change but the EPUB and PDF downloads will not be enabled for existing DRM-free titles. If you want to allow reader downloads for these titles, follow the directions below on or after December 9, and select the option not to apply DRM." then directions followed. |

Yes, DRM free KFX is possible, so Amazon are technically lying to people using DRM free option on KDP upload and KFX delivery (all newer Kindles and the Apps). They want control. It's not about "piracy". |

Replacing elements that have semantic meaning (like H1 and EM) with generic elements (like DIV and SPAN) results in accessibility issues. Text-to-speech won't have the clues it needs to do the right thing. Also, this is not about "looking good on a Kindle", as the EPUB isn't intended to be used on a Kindle...it's intended to be used on other devices. Because of that, it should maintain the proper elements. Amazon doesn't seem to have a problem creating KF8 files that use appropriate HTML elements, so why should this EPUB output be any different? |
