I saw the original message and tried that before I saw your addition. And...it still didn't work.
As for the dual video chipset, I don't know? No, I guess I am? I looked up how to tell, and I do have two things listed under Display adapters: Intel(R) UHD Graphics NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU How do I know which Calibre is using? Quote:

Okay, so I googled and thought I figured out how to do it, and I tried both, and still doesn't work.

I tried both. Google just said restart Calibre. Should I try switching and restarting the laptop, not just Calibre?
Thank you so much for trying to help! Quote:

If you type 'set envir' in Start menu it should pop "Edit environment variables for your account" click Open and enter a new User environment variable.

Then you will have to do what several responders have already suggested.
Disable all startup tasks, confirm the problem has gone away. If it has re-enable the startup tasks one-by-one and do a restart between each until you find the culprit. BTW you do have a firewall - Fort.exe BR |

I've already done that. I disabled them all, and it still won't open any books.
And yes, I know. But I tried it with that disabled too, and still nothing. What's odd is that I have one .epub in a different location (on my desktop) because I copied and pasted it there to remind myself I wanted to read it soon, and that opens fine. I tried that with a different book just now, and that one won't open. So not sure why one will but all others won't. *sigh* By the way, did I need to like browse directory or browse file when I put in that environment thingy? Quote:

Okay, so I didn't do anything else, other than delete the environment thingy, and now my books are opening just fine (and as quickly as they ever did). *sigh*

Let me recap my understanding of what you're telling us: In Windows Safe mode you can read an epub that is in a calibre library, but in Windows "Normal" mode you can't read the same book in the same library - even after disabling all Start Up tasks and restarting Windows. Did you use Safe Mode Minimal? Quote:
What did you do to the book on the desktop that won't open, that you did not do with the book on the desktop that will open - e.g. convert, edit, embed metadata etc etc. Quote:

Yes, that's right. (Or was.) Yes, it was minimal.
But ALL ebooks open fine now. In the Calibre folder or not. I have no idea why. I didn't do anything else. Everything is reset to like it was (all the startup stuff is on, including my firewall), I'm not in safe mode, etc etc. So I don't know. I mean, I'm THRILLED it's working again, but...it's also super frustrating! LOL Quote:
