For a number of past versions now, when Calibre is shutdown, a screen message says:
Shutting down Running database shutdown plugins. This could take a few seconds... I really do NOT consider 2+ minutes to be "a few seconds." Yes, it DOES take that long for me!Before this, when you clicked the X in the upper right, shutdown was basically instantaneous. So why did the need to have this prolonged "running database plug-ins" happen?! To me that seems like it is something the people who create the plugins should have to solve and NOT have to have Calibre's shutting down take so long! I mean, seriously, my Calibre shutdowns do usually take over 2 minutes -- during which it fills my monitor screen and I cannot do anything else except twittle my thumbs. Well, that isn't exactly true. I've taken to using the Task Manager to shut down Calibre once I click it close, because that minutes wait is so damn annoying! So far, the forced Task Manager shutdowns has not affect Calibre or any of the plugins I have in their performance, so I am at a lost as to why having to wait *minutes* for Calibre to shut down became necessary! AND it is NOT my computer, I got a top-of-the-line, high-end, FAST pc last year and Calibre is the ONLY program where I have this problem! I've use Calibre for decades and have even donate to its site. But this seemingly-pointless, extended shutdown has me VERY ANNOYED with this program. ![]() I cannot imagine I am the ONLY one who has this problem or that I am the ONLY one bothered by it, but to me, this is a MAJOR BUG for Calibre and needs to be resolved ASAP. But, I suspect, nothing will be done. I've become very cynical about Bug Solutions after reading a lot of the comments in this forum. ** |

If you have the Backup Configuration Folder optional plugin installed, check to see if there are any very large files in the calibre configuration folder?
I had a similar experience (shutdown went from 2-3 secs to as many minutes), the cause was me inadvertently copying a 2GB MP4 file into my calibre configuration folder instead of my video editing folder. BR |

There have been no changes to how shutdown works or how long it takes (which is a few seconds) in many years. You have likely installed either some third party plugin that is causing the issue or some software on you computer is causing the issue. Reboot in safe mode for the latter and run with --ignore-plugins for the former. And watch your tone when you are asking for help, or you will be ignored.

Tame your A/V for the backup folder.
Some (active) scan everything that have already been scanned when you created the original. |

Additionally you could try running calibre in debug mode and post the log that it produces.

Mine shuts down in under two seconds. On a four year old laptop with multiple libraries, the largest of which is embarrassingly huge. I don't think this is a Calibre bug.
And your attitude is a hot mess. This is a very well supported, FREE app. You've got a prompt response right here from the actual creator. Pull your head in. Last edited by meeera; 12-04-2025 at 02:23 AM. |

For what it may be worth, my calibre install used to shut down too fast to notice any delays. I've used the Backup configuration folder(s) plugin installed for close to a year now and it does slow my shutdown so it now takes ~12 seconds to shut down.
Please note that this delay is not a "MAJOR BUG" in calibre but rather the result of having to create and save a .zip archive of your current configuration folder. In my case, the majority of the .zip file is occupied by a backup of my current plugins. About 99.4MB of data is stored in the 81MB .zip file. One acquaintance who has a older system and about 315MB to backup measures his shutdown delay around 50 seconds but he likes the secure feeling from having his calibre configuration automatically backed up. As @BetterRed said, if you are storing other files in the calibre configuration directory or have issues with the cache not being cleared, shutdown times can skyrocket. |

On my computer calibre shuts down immediately, with no delay whatsoever. I don't use the configuration backup plugin, as I prefer to back my settings up manually.

If I were making frequent changes or experimenting, perhaps I'd want to automate saving. But for a steady-state user, backing up periodically is sufficient. |

I find it's best to ask questions like this BEFORE you get so annoyed that you rant.

On Windows 10, if you close calibre when it's minimised to the taskbar you won't see the Shutting down overlay.
I use a Windows add-on (7TT Taskbar tweaker) that has a setting to close on middle mouse button click, you can also do it via Winkey+T and Shift+F10. BR |

That was NOT helpful. Nor was your response helpful. And, as I said, I have read a lot of the comments and topics in this Forum and it has left me cynical about even bothering to report a BUG like this. As far as being FREE, as I said, I have donated to Calibre, far more than I have paid for many other programs, because I like it -- overall -- and have used it for going on 2 decades. AND FYI... I just restarted Calibre using the Start with NO 3rd-PARTY PLUGINS option and, golly-gee! it STILL took about 2 minutes to shutdown for me. So it would seem this is NOT a 3rd-party plug-in problem. So, YES, I do think this is a Calibre Bug. PLUS, I forgot to mention, when it is shutting-down, if I do anything else, even touch a key, Calibre -- in the process of shutting down, then become "Non-Responsive" -- and then I am forced to use the Task Manager to shut it down. Because of that, I have just taken to using the Task Manager to shut Calibre down. ** |

I shut down Calibre 8.15 on W10 and it takes about 3 seconds.
Something is getting in the way of your shutdown. I do keep my 'recently deleted' pretty close to MT. The rest is pretty much vanilla |

I have physical health issues and spending time trying to do some of these computer restarts and other potential solutions can take me a lot of time and effort to do. And, yes, I am upset that after using Calibre for decades, shutting it down NOW had become such a major pain in the butt. ![]() ** |

Whilst I appreciate your annoyance, have you actually tried it in safe mode? And checked antivirus and your configuration folder? You haven't said.....
Do you have a debug log you can post? I'm using a 2020 i5 and it closes within a few seconds FWIW. Good luck. Last edited by Martinoptic; Yesterday at 05:57 PM. |
