Why do you hate the DXG? I just bought one to read manga on.

The screen is the worst resolution of any Kindle ever released. It's just bigger.

FWIW, they were 4 GB of storage. Amazon didn't sell any past 4 GB until the PW3 Manga Edition, and mass market Kindles until the Oasis 2.

I do still love my Oasis 3. My mother is using it right now and I'm using a refurbished 11th gen PW which is fine. But I miss my buttons and the auto-rotate feature on the Oasis. I wish the battery was replaceable (all reports I've seen say it's not possible...that attempting to do so will almost certainly breaks the screen) and of course wish it was usb-c, but otherwise...
I had a long run with my K5 too (non-touch K4?)...loved it, but I might have to give 2nd place to the PW 11th gen. (I never had a Voyage and I know it gets a ton of love.) |

The 1st generation Kindle is my fav. I bought it the first day Amazon started selling them. It wasn't my first e-ink device, cuz I had the Sony PRS-500 already. (My Sony PRS-505 is the best built/best looking of all my e-readers.)
I am one of the few that likes the ugly design of that first Kindle. I still have one and it still works. I was fascinated why it was designed so weirdly and is so 'ugly.' Turns out the designer wanted it to be shaped kinda like how a book looks when it is open. Hence the sloping edge and weird shape, mimicking the cascade of pages on the right side.I wonder if he is still proud of that idea? He should be tho, cuz it looks like something out of the old sci-fi show Space:1999 to me. lol I'm not normal like you all; I haven't sold any of my readers. Which is why I have about 11 e-readers laying around my house so far. I've kept every one I bought over the years. lol Last edited by tsgreer; 12-04-2025 at 03:15 PM. |

But it only does Mobi, has no WiFi. No users fonts, publisher fonts or even small PDFs.
Only Western Roman language. No Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, or Asian support or fonts. The software was from Mobipocket, bought in 2005. Despite the 2007 release and Linux the user software application was 10+ years out of date. Also an abysmal vizplex screen. |

And I like the no wi-fi. I'm a sideloader. I never bought from amazon, I'd always get my ebooks from other places that had no DRM. Every ereader I have, I turn off the wi-fi. |

The old mobi is only HTML3, a small step-up from plain text. The later AWZ3/KF8 was backported to K3 and later. It's very similar to epub, especially epub2, so conversion to/from is very good. The K3 is the first useful Kindle. |

That is simply not true. The K2 was my first e-ink device and it was vey useful to me for years. Even after I got a K4NT I kept my K2 at work for times when I forgot to bring my K4NT and to be able to buy ebooks on 1 day special without having to remember when I got home or even go through all the overhead of making a purchase from home.
Kindles are horrible for browsing around for books, but 15 years ago they were great for buying and immediately starting a specific e-book. I never got a K3 because I didn't consider it sufficiently better than a K2. That view eventually changed, but by then the Voyage blew all its predecessors out of the water. |

Besides the fact that I read so many books on that first Kindle, for me, it was proof that the world was starting to take e-books and e-book readers seriously. I knew widespread adoption was around the corner, and I was right. |
