I haven't used imazing that way before, but it sounds plausible. At the very least you just plug in your iphone 12, open imazing, and get the ipa for marvin and your christmas tree app onto your desktop.

I decided to do a full iCloud backup to an external hard drive before setting up the new phone. It’s been a little bit of a hassle setting up symbolic links because my Win computer doesn’t have enough space to store the backup in the default location.

On another note, I also am using rclone to back up my OneDrive account to the same external drive and then setting up a differential copy to run periodically. If anyone is interested in how to do that I can put the instructions here or private message you.

I have some great news to report. I was able to successfully load Marvin onto my new iPhone using the info in the great video! The steps were a little different using Windows but it worked great.

The only thing I'm having trouble with is that when I try to restore the backup on my new iPhone17, it says:

"Oops Marvin is expecting a file called 'marvin.m3backup' in your documents directory. It doesn't seem you have taken a backup yet"

I haven't made a backup from my old iPhone 12 in a few months, so I did that, and I get the standard message:

"Confirm: Your backup will be saved in your documents directory and may take up to 1.7 GB. Continue?"

I tell it to continue and I get a strange message I haven't seen before:

"Changes detected. Marvin detected changes in your documents directory. When your books finish copying, press 'Import now' to import them"

I click 'Import Now' and a popup says "Ready 1 file(s) were imported"

I clicked that and then told it to "Keep it in my documents directory" (the 1.5 GB file), but wasn't sure how to "get that file from the iPhone 12", copy it to the new iPhone 17, and import it.

Fortunately, I figured out that iMazing does that too. You go to your new device, go to Apps / Documents under Marvin and just drag the backup file into that folder and then do a restore in the app.

I got the banner on the bottom, which I removed by doing "restore tips"

So turtle... I'd like to say a huge thank you. I'm an obsessive reader and I even have all my User Lists, etc. It looks exactly like it did on my old phone.

I've mentioned 'Marvin' to some people over the years, and it's amazing how many people don't read at all.

Hi guys!

My first ipad I have marvin but my backup was deleted.

It's possible to get the .ipa file to download and restore just the app (I have my library in calibre)

If you have Marvin on a current device you can connect it to a computer that is running iMazing and save the ipa file to your computer. Then you can use iMAzing to install that ipa file on any other device.

If you are talking about the backup of your books from within Marvin, then you won't be able to restore books without a backup file, but you will be able to re-download any files from your normal sources like OPDS, dropbox, or calibre.

I don't have Marvin on other devices. The old ipad gone a long time ago. Is there a chance to get the ipa anywhere?

The ipa is locked to the AppleID used to install it originally... as far as I know ...

You could try ANY backup file of a device that had it installed. I'm pretty sure iMazing would be able to pull the ipa from such a file.

I think it's over for me since I don't have any old backup with Marvin...

The iPad that I had Marvin is gone and I deleted the old backups. My fault.

Aw man that sucks dude... Do you have your epub's backed up? i.e. if you're on an iPhone, they might be in your device's Download's folder depending on how you get them.

I've found an imperfect reader app that I've been using for epubs that no longer open in Marvin after a recent iOS update. It's called BookFusion and I've been able to:

- Set black background with red letters
- Set continuous scrolling mode

Those were kind of my 2 main things. Like I said, I don't like it nearly as much as Marvin but it's better than the Apple Books app in my opinion which gives me neither of those two things.

Another interesting thing I found is that if I do centered horizontal alignment and expand the horizontal margins inward as much as possible, I can do the continuous scrolling mode and go a little faster because my eyes aren't flicking right and left. I'm a pretty slow reader and it's not like I want to race through a book, but I have hundreds of books I want to read as I'm sure you guys do too.

Imazing kept wanting me to connect to Apple store, which caused me some confusion. After I restarted everything and decided to connect to the Apple store, it WORKED!! Never going to update the new ipad. Thanks so much for everyone's explanation.

While Marvin works, it has forgotten I had paid for it, so I'm getting a nag on the bottom of the screen. Any help?

Ok, the steps in "So Marvin's Gone" about how to get the nag removed also requires you to be connected to the internet. Then it works great! I'm leaving this here just in case someone else has the same problem

I have my books in calibre and in my Google drive. So my epub files is not a problem.

My problem is I lost my backup with the.ipa of marvin.

I bought Mapleread SE and like it.

That's awesome! I was able to do a "restore purchases" and the banner went away, but I think other people haven't had that work.
