Daubeny, Ulric: The Elemental: Tales of the Supernatural …. v1. 14 Nov 2025

This collection stands out for its original ideas and well-crafted stories. Daubeny creates a haunting atmosphere of subtle horror, with occasional humor and clever wordplay. He makes use of a few traditional tropes: there are out of body experiences, time shifts, possession, witches, and supernatural vengeance; there are images of the dead, cursed objects, and traditional hauntings.

This collection of 15 stories includes “The Sumach”, Daubeny’s cult-classic tale of botanical vampirism. “The Elemental” is rather Lovecraftian in its use of physical horror wrought by an unknown invasive supernatural force. Other notable stories include “The People of the Hidden Room," about a self-returning cabinet; “Matheson’s Mummy”, an Egyptian relic engineering a return to its homeland; “The Serpent”, a strange haunted musical instrument. The book is suitable for readers who do not insist on dripping grue and gore in their horror tales.

================
Ulric Daubeny (1888-1922) was a British scholar of church architecture and of woodwind instruments; publishing texts on both topics. In 1919 he published The Elemental, his only volume of fiction.
