IMHO, that's meaningless. You really don't need cover for a chapter title and a drop-cap.

I recently reread “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown. It was the illustrated edition so I read it on my Colorsoft. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Granted, illustrated novels are pretty rare but I love seeing my covers in color. To each his own.

What is neither necessary nor important is to give an explanation about the personal use of colour in the interior of books. Let us just say that reading a novel on a colour e-reader is perfectly legible and aesthetically pleasing to me, with various touches of colour. Our aesthetic tastes do not need to coincide.

I won't need or want a color eReader for novels. I would rather manufacturers concentrated on making black and white screens sharper and sharper.

That said, I agree it's a personal choice.

As I have told you before. You just need to be smarter than the ereader. I have carried mine in my back pocket since my PRS-300 days 16 years ago. It is a non-issue. A larger one on the other hand, does not work as well for me since I travel extensively for work, and have limited space for the ereader.

The fact that I physically cannot purchase a Libra 2 is infuriating. I do not want or need a Libra Colour, or any colour ereader for that matter.

Libra 2 is only Carta 1200.
For me, anything that is not Carta 1300 is a non-starter.

Carta 1200 is very nice. It's just that Carta 1300 is a tad better.

Carta 1200 with no flush layer (Libra 2) is still better than Carta 1300 with a flush layer (white Onyx Boox Go 7 BW). This might be different compared to the black Go 7, which has a glass screen and supposedly slightly better contrast than the white version, but I doubt it's better than the Libra 2.

That said, I'd love a Libra 3/BW with a faster processor and Carta 1300. It can get even better.

Not always. It depends on the device. I.e. the screen itself may be better, but you don't use the screen without a device, and much depends on the device, the top layer, the touch layer, illumination and so on. The quality of the exact same eink screens varies pretty wildly between different devices.

All the Carta are good and differences are marginal. More variation between models and examples of the same model.

1. Seems to be huge quality variation for eink panels of same part.
2. The light pipe layer varies in quality for same model and hugely between models
3. Some Carta models slight improve contrast by not having layers added by OEM, but the touch and/or light pipe layers integrated, saving maybe one layer.
4. Huge variation on quality of outer screen (etching, glass vs plastic etc), compare Kindle Voyage, PW3, Oasis 1 and PW4. The PW4 is poorest yet is a later Carta. The Voyage, PW3 and Oasis 1 are essentially the same eink, but differ a lot.

The Kobo integrate best with Calibre and have a "SideloadedMode=true" setting.

The Kaleido 3 colour overlay print makes a Carta 1300 worst than Pearl.

I find that the worst for legibility is when you use shelf paper, especially patterns.
