Downloaded & installed a 3rd party 1,001 blade Swiss army knife because it has an export/import tool for one of the multitude of obscure features in MS Word - Autocorrect->Exceptions->Don't capitalise after…
Export was fine - asked for a folder, then saved the data in an xml file, but the Import asked for a folder but 'forgot' to ask for the file. Yesterday I accidentally discovered that MS has reinstated the Research feature that disappeared when they onboarded CoPilot. But not to where it was in References, the user has to customise the Ribbon… which is easy enough… but how many Word users even know it's doable. Sigh… |

For what it may be worth, my personal preference for pork broth is pork neckbones or backbones in the slow cooker. Most of the commercial pork broths have way too much salt in them while my homemade version allows me to control the amount of salt and flavourings.

Sorry about mixing up details. I was using Duck Duck Go, but then I was looking at the specific web sites for some of the local store I use. I wasn't really trying to find a place to buy it, I was instead trying to find if *this specific store* carried it. for the cases of about 4 stores.
within that context, those websites did not follow any search limiting syntax that I found. I did eventually find some, but yeah, I had to look in a local Asian market to find some place that would carry it. And I agree about the level of salt most of the commercial broths use. |

Wow! I guess they have no limit to the amount of space they are willing to forcibly waste at the bottom of the window. I haven't done a google search in ages. When did they start that crap?

This is so ill-devised and it's driving me mad because I have to admit I need google results for some queries, if not I'd ditch it for good.
They assume the user has a FIXED search preference, which is just NOT true for many. I have several sets of context searches that use gl=US, gl=UK etc. as well as hl=en, hl=it, hl=es etc. along with pws=0 or not. plus udm=14, etc. They're overriding what language I see in the results snippets AND titles, no matter which operators I run. And they seem to lock any feedback threads on this issue while saying that it's a preference set via cookies. COOKIES ARE FIXED PREFERENCES, ffs. https://support.google.com/websearch...esult-snippets ARGHH! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (unfortunately all add-ons and userscripts fixing this aren't effective anymore) |

the beauty of search parameters is that you can set various sets of preferences without being logged in, which is why I always used search engines this way. DDG has cool parameters but I am (WAS) more used to the gl= operator on Google, which provides me geolocalized context. Actually I never digged into DDG geo operator, I just wanted to keep google working as before but this time it seems they screwed it badly with no userscript or add-on effective workarounds. Now it seems to me that whatever GEO CONTEXT one sets it to use (gl=IT, for instance), Google wants to provide results' titles and snippets in italian. (NO, when I use gl=IT I need the results in that region context. They shouldn't mix that with whatever language I have in hl=. Give me geo context without altering the language in displayed results, in summary) This context vs language mix-up was extended recently to Youtube audio tracks and subtitles as well, but thankfully there's a working solution: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...o-translation/ edit: I think there's also a possibility that they're locking the results language to IP location, but I don't want to troubleshoot this using VPN. For some time recently, there was a working solution for Reddit results (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...ituntranslate/) but this isn't working currently either... Neither https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...h-translation/ is effective. The mere existence of the mentioned add-ons demonstrates that Google changes weren't well received Last edited by Comfy.n; Today at 03:05 PM. |

Forgive my usual levels of honesty, but, you appear to be fussing over this. If it is of such import to you? What you need to do is:
- If within the EU, buy a Fritz router, ditch the provider's stock unit. Don't daisy-chain them, ditch the stock router altogether. If you don't have a stock router but instead own an Asus, Cisco or DEDdadalock, ditch that router too, no matter its cost; buy a Fritz. This is far, far more relevant than you may think. - Ditch anything google; that includes Chrome and chromium, not just google. - Firefox, learn to about:config and policies. If for some reason you're been led to think that while it does have its benefits, 'x' or 'y' is only for Chrome/chromium? Learn to about:config and policies. - Use a third party DNS (not Google's!). Plenty of free ones, sans any downsides. At all. If you still have trouble, or put differently, if you're so "unique" in your needs that common practices just will not do, not for you, no sir, - Finally, since what we once called "advance, custom-tailored search" no longer exists, not really, the almighty Algorithm(tm) to whom we all bow has seen to that, start looking for -purchased- software and/or -free- home made solutions that allow for private search machine instances. Tip here, much easier and cheaper to achieve this on a UNIX based OS, ie Linux or Mac. This final bit that follows may be useless to you, shall admit i stopped reading, i do apologise; but just in case a handy translating app's in need as well, would recommend this one; for Firefox, after you've learned to about:config and policies: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...r-paginas-web/ (mind not the Spanish; no one expects it after all) Last edited by LostHisMarbles; Today at 03:09 PM. |
